Maternal Depression Affects Fetal Development

Recent findings by American scientists indicate that although pregnant women seldom report their depressive symptoms, nearly one in five exhibit signs of depression during pregnancy. Thus, pregnancy is an ideal time for women to assess whether they have depression.
Results show women are nearly twice as likely as men to develop depression. Initial symptoms typically appear during childbearing years, and pregnancy poses a higher risk than the postpartum period. However, since most pregnant women view pregnancy as a joyful event, they usually hesitate to disclose depressive symptoms to doctors, fearing to disappoint family members.
This study surveyed 3,472 pregnant women at 25 weeks gestation. A seven-day depression screening revealed approximately 20% showed depressive symptoms. Among them, 86% had not received formal treatment such as medication, psychotherapy, or counseling. Additionally, one in four women who experienced depressive symptoms within the past six months reported currently undergoing treatment.
Initial human and animal experiments suggest untreated depression-like psychological conditions in pregnant women may impair fetal development, leading to low birth weight, premature birth, or impaired brain development. In this study, 28% of participants had experienced depression at least once in their lives—such as feeling persistently sad or hopeless for two consecutive weeks, losing interest in work and daily activities. Over 40% of surveyed women reported that depressive symptoms returned after becoming pregnant. Results indicate that women with prior depression history are five times more likely to develop depression again than those without such history. Furthermore, 50% of women with a depression history developed postpartum depression.
Studies show that women with weaker constitutions, those who drink alcohol frequently or smoke heavily, are more susceptible to depressive symptoms. However, depression incidence is not directly related to age or race. Researchers emphasize that pregnant women should promptly inform doctors if they notice depressive symptoms, ensure proper nutrition and sleep, and consider self-therapy or psychological interventions. Women with severe symptoms may benefit from medication. Research confirms that common antidepressants used during pregnancy pose minimal risk to the fetus.
