Hand-Rubbing and Face-Massaging to Improve Sleep
Hand-rubbing and face-massaging are proven traditional health-preserving methods with beneficial effects on sleep. Here’s how:
(1) Hand-Rubbing: Rub both hands together vigorously, covering palms, backs, fingers, and wrists until hands become warm. Holistic biomedicine considers the palm and second metacarpal bone as microcosmic representations of the entire body. According to TCM, six of the twelve meridians—hand taiyin lung, hand jueyin pericardium, hand shaoyin heart, hand yangming large intestine, hand shaoyang triple burner, and hand taiyang small intestine—run through the hands. Thus, regular hand-rubbing directly or indirectly massages all organs and tissues, effectively preventing various diseases. Insomnia is one such indication. Even without insomnia, regular hand-rubbing improves sleep quality.
(2) Face-Massaging: After warming both palms, rub them from the forehead down along both sides of the nose to the chin, then back up along the cheeks to the temples, performing gentle circular motions 36 times. Holistic biomedicine views the face as a microcosm of the whole body. TCM holds that facial regions correspond closely to internal organs: left cheek corresponds to liver and gallbladder, right cheek to lung and large intestine, forehead to heart and small intestine, nose to spleen and stomach, lower jaw to kidney and bladder. Therefore, regular face-massaging effectively stimulates these organs, maintaining or enhancing their physiological functions, thus preventing organ-related diseases. Insomnia is also a target condition for face-massage therapy.
Regular hand-rubbing and face-massaging not only improve sleep but also increase finger dexterity, promote blood circulation in hands and face, remove aged keratinized skin cells, improve skin respiration, enhance sweat and sebaceous gland secretion, tighten skin, boost elasticity and vitality, prevent fine wrinkles, delay skin aging, and achieve anti-aging and beautifying effects.
This health-preserving method can be performed once daily in the morning and evening, or during breaks, before tea or meals, or during conversation—especially suitable for middle-aged and elderly people, and women seeking improved sleep and beauty.
