Can Acupuncture Treat Myopia?

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Massage
Myopia, historically known as "near vision clarity, distant vision blur," is an eye disease characterized by clear near vision but blurred distant vision. Modern medicine attributes myopia to genetic factors or poor postnatal development causing elongation of the eyeball, or to spasm of the ciliary muscle leading to changes in lens curvature, resulting in images focusing in front of the retina. Acupuncture shows good efficacy for the latter cause. Myopia involves local refractive errors and systemic constitutional factors: overwork affecting the mind and spirit leads to depletion of heart yang, preventing its upward transmission and causing obstruction of ocular meridians; or prolonged illness and fatigue depleting liver and kidney, resulting in insufficient essence and blood. These factors, combined with prolonged close work, late-night reading, and strain on the eyes, ultimately lead to this condition. Therefore, treatment must address both local and systemic aspects, balancing overall constitution to improve and sustain therapeutic outcomes. For the Mind-Overworked Type: Protruding eyeballs, blurred vision, pale complexion, fatigue, palpitations, lethargy, mental exhaustion, frequent dreams, insomnia. White coating on the tongue, pale tongue, weak pulse. Selected Points: Sizhukong (TE23), Tongziliao (GB1), Zanzhu (BL2), Jingming (BL1), Si Bai (ST2), Guangming (GB37), Bifeng (GB20), Fengchi (GB20), Shenmen (HT7), Xinyu (BL15), Neiguan (PC6). Procedure: Select 4–6 points, emphasizing coordination between distal and proximal points. Use balanced reinforcing and reducing technique with filiform needles. Apply reinforcing method to distal points. Once daily, retain needles for 20 minutes. One course consists of 12 sessions, with a rest period of 5–7 days between courses. For Liver-Kidney Deficiency Type: Dry eyes, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness in waist and knees, pale tongue with little coating, deep and weak pulse. After obtaining deqi at the selected points, attach one electrode to Fengchi and alternately connect the other to the remaining points. Adjust current intensity and frequency to patient tolerance. Stimulate each point for 3–5 minutes. Once daily. One course lasts 7 days, with a 3-day break between courses.Auricular Acupuncture Therapy: Points include Eye, Mu1, Mu2, Heart, Liver, Kidney, Shenmen. One course lasts 7 days. Generally, continuous treatment for three months is recommended.Plum Blossom Needle Therapy: Points include Yu Zhen to Da Zhu, and all points around the eye socket. Procedure: Lightly tap the area from Yu Zhen to Da Zhu along both sides of the neck, 5–10 times, until slight bleeding occurs. Lightly tap points around the eye socket 3–5 times, until skin reddens and patient feels warmth. Once daily. One course consists of 10 sessions, with a 3–5 day rest between courses.During treatment, emphasize scientific eye use and avoid eye strain.
