Herbal Dietary Remedies for Neurasthenia

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, neurasthenia is attributed to emotional injury causing stagnation of Qi flow. Through years of clinical practice, many effective herbal dietary remedies have been accumulated, examples include:
Lotus Seed Pork Heart Soup: Boil 15 grams of stir-fried Juemingzi to extract juice, add one sliced pork heart and 100 grams of lotus seeds with hearts, cook into a porridge, season lightly with salt. Suitable for patients with irritability, chest tightness, rib distension, dry mouth and bitter taste, constipation, dizziness, headache, red eyes, and tinnitus.
Orange Cake (from *Shi Jian Ben Cao*): Use 250 grams of oranges, remove peel and seeds, mix with 50 grams of sugar, marinate for one day until the orange flesh absorbs the sugar. Then simmer gently in a pot until liquid evaporates, cool, mash into paste, mix with additional sugar and roasted sesame powder, store as filling. Prepare 500 grams of buckwheat flour, moisten with water, knead into dough, divide and wrap with filling, pan-fry until cooked. Suitable for patients with emotional instability, depression, chest and rib distension, loss of appetite, and menstrual irregularity.
Goji Berry and Jujube Egg Soup: 15 grams goji berries, 6 jujubes, 1 bowl of water. Boil until boiling, then after 5 minutes, add one egg, slightly sweeten with sugar, consume daily. Suitable for dizziness, blurred vision, mental forgetfulness, insomnia, and vivid dreams.
Yi Gan Tang (from *Jin Kui Yao Lue*): 10 grams licorice, 30 grams floating wheat, 6 jujubes. Boil in two bowls of clear water until reduced to one bowl, strain and drink the broth. Consume continuously for 5–7 days. Suitable for hallucinations, restlessness, insomnia, hot flushes, and night sweats.
Gastrodia and Pig Brain Stew: 10 grams Gastrodia, one pig brain, sufficient water. Steam thoroughly in a double boiler and consume. Once or every other day, repeat for 5–7 times. Suitable for dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, tinnitus, and patients with hypertension or arteriosclerosis.
Lily and Egg Yolk Soup (from *Jin Kui Yao Lue*): 60 grams lily, add 3 bowls of water, boil down to 2 bowls. Beat 2 eggs, discard whites, mix yolks into lily soup, stir well, boil again, add appropriate ice sugar for seasoning. Divide and consume twice daily. Suitable for restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, dizziness, blurred vision, hot palms and soles, tinnitus, lower back pain, and soreness.
Cordyceps and Duck Stew: One duck, clean internal organs, wash thoroughly. Place 10 grams Cordyceps inside the duck’s cavity, sew up the opening, add sufficient water, stew until cooked. Season with salt and monosodium glutamate, serve as a meal. Suitable for chronic illness with weakness, poor appetite, insomnia, impotence, and seminal emission.
All the above herbal dishes are mild in nature and can be selected according to condition throughout the year. Patients may choose based on their specific circumstances.
