Folk Herbal Therapy for Fractures
Traditional Chinese medicine holds: “Injuries from falls and blows result from stagnant blood inside not being dispersed. If blood does not circulate, stasis cannot be removed; if stasis remains, bones cannot heal.” “Qi leads blood, blood nourishes qi.” “Liver governs tendons, stores blood; Kidney governs bones, produces marrow; Spleen governs muscles, controls transformation and transportation; Lung governs skin and hair, connects to all pulses.” Based on these theories, we use herbs that activate blood circulation, resolve stasis, connect tendons and bones, nourish liver and kidney, and tonify qi and blood. This effectively achieves the goals of removing stasis, filling bones, regenerating muscles, relaxing tendons, and balancing qi.
The main formula consists of Frankincense, Myrrh, Ant Egg, Strychnine Seed, Musk, Crab Bone, Natural Copper, Bone-Clearing Herb, Earthworm, and Borneol. Frankincense, pungent, bitter, warm; Myrrh, bitter, neutral; both enter heart, liver, and spleen meridians, activating blood and relieving pain, reducing swelling and promoting tissue regeneration—these are the sovereign herbs. Earthworm and Strychnine Seed dissipate blood stasis, unblock meridians, relieve pain—these are minister herbs. Added are Ant Egg and Natural Copper to tonify liver and kidney, connect tendons and bones. Musk and Borneol, aromatic and penetrating, move qi and relieve pain, guiding herbs to the site of illness—these are messenger herbs. Sovereign, minister, assistant, and messenger herbs complement each other, providing good results for various fractures.
External application formula mainly includes Human Urine Ash, Natural Copper, Gallnut, Frankincense, Myrrh, etc. It can be used alone or combined with oral medication, effectively resolving stasis, promoting new tissue formation, reducing swelling and pain, and connecting bones.
Based on our clinical observations, early-stage fractures feature blood stasis and swelling with severe pain; in late stages, some patients develop soft tissue adhesions, joint stiffness, and limb numbness. According to these features, we divide fracture treatment into three phases. In the early phase, increase dosage of Rhubarb, Earthworm, Papaya, Dandelion, Strychnine Seed, etc., to stop bleeding, resolve stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain. In the middle phase, focus on harmonizing blood, promoting new tissue formation, and reconnecting tendons and bones—use the original formula, reducing Strychnine Seed, Blood-Enriching Herb, Earthworm if no pain. In the late phase, since bones have already united, treatment focuses on relaxing tendons, lubricating joints, resolving stasis, dissolving nodules, strengthening tendons and bones. Add fumigation therapy. Formula: Herba Lycopodii, Great Burdock, Small Burdock, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Mulberry Branch, Ligusticum, Rhubarb, Safflower, Earthworm, etc. Clinical use shows better efficacy.
