Multiple "Fire Extinguishing" Methods for "Heat" Conditions Must Be Symptom-Specific

🔑 Keywords: Other · TCM Knowledge
"Heat" is a specialized term in Traditional Chinese Medicine. If one experiences dry throat and pain, red eyes, hot nasal cavity, dry mouth and tongue pain, cracked corners of the mouth, nosebleeds, or toothache, TCM considers this "fire."
How does "fire" arise? First, direct exposure to external "hot pathogenic factors" can cause "fire" symptoms. Second, internal "fire"—an invisible force driving vital functions—can become unbalanced due to yin-yang disharmony, losing its normal containment function and thus triggering "fire" symptoms.
Many specific factors can provoke "fire": extreme emotional fluctuations, heatstroke, exposure to cold, wind invasion, smoking, alcohol consumption, excessive intake of pungent foods like garlic, ginger, scallions, chili peppers, or greasy foods such as lamb and dog meat, poisoning, and sleep deprivation.
TCM categorizes "fire" based on location: "Upper Burner Fire" includes dizziness and sore throat; "Middle Burner Fire" involves irritability, thirst, and epigastric pain; "Lower Burner Fire" includes constipation and red urine. Based on organ orifice associations, red eyes indicate "Liver Fire," flaring nostrils and panting suggest "Lung Fire," and oral ulcers denote "Heart Fire," etc. Combined with internal conditions, these fires are broadly classified into "Excess" and "Deficiency" types: severe, rapidly progressing symptoms indicate "Excess Fire"; milder, prolonged symptoms with hand/foot heat, tidal fever, and night sweats indicate "Deficiency Fire." This classification provides a basis for treatment.
When treating "fire," two points must be observed: first, use herbal medicines rather than blindly relying on Western drugs. Herbal therapy adjusts the whole body to treat root causes, whereas Western drugs only address symptoms. Second, follow TCM theory for syndrome differentiation and treatment. For example, treat "Middle Burner Fire" with Qing Wei San, "Heart Fire" with Dao Chi San, and "Excess Fire" with San Huang Pian or Niuhuang Jiedu Pian to purge fire—best done under physician guidance. Using San Huang Pian indiscriminately for any "fire" may not work and could even worsen the condition.
