Adaptability in Health Preservation

There are countless traditional health preservation methods passed down from ancient times. Yet today, the idyllic rural scenery of "picking chrysanthemums beneath the eastern fence, leisurely gazing at the southern mountain" no longer exists. From cities to villages, daytime traffic and nighttime television and phone calls have erased the quiet atmosphere. Therefore, health preservation must be adapted to time, place, and individual needs.
1. Adaptation to Time: Ancient people worked at sunrise and rested at sunset, living in harmony with natural cycles. Modern people, however, enjoy constant heating in winter and air conditioning in summer, making them less sensitive to seasonal changes. Thus, health preservation should begin with daily habits—such as controlling diet and regulating rest and sleep times.
2. Adaptation to Place: In ancient times, people lived in villages surrounded by fields and paths, where neighbors could easily communicate. Today, modern residents live in isolated apartments, rarely interacting with neighbors, increasing psychological stress. Therefore, health preservation should emphasize group-based physical activities, such as Tai Chi or group dancing—ideal for modern seniors, offering both physical exercise and social interaction, reducing loneliness.
3. Adaptation to Individual Differences: Ancient people engaged in more physical labor, giving them greater opportunities for bodily movement. They preferred quiet practices like qigong to regulate energy and cultivate the mind. Modern people mostly engage in mental labor, commuting by car and resting at home, resulting in little physical activity. Thus, dancing, martial arts, and jogging effectively compensate for these deficiencies. Moreover, generalizations are inappropriate. For those naturally inclined toward stillness, calligraphy or tending flowers can bring joy and support healthy aging. Going against one’s nature only increases mental stress and harms health.
Thus, health preservation cannot rigidly follow ancient methods; flexibility and adaptation are most suitable.
