Why Is It Said “Do Not Eat Goji Berries When Away from Home for Thousands of Miles”?
This saying is directed at men. Goji berries refer specifically to goji fruits, the fruit of the Lycium barbarum plant, a deciduous small shrub of the Solanaceae family. It is used medicinally and has a neutral nature and sweet taste. According to the "Commentary on the Classic of Materia Medica," it "tonifies qi and essence, strengthens the yin pathway." The "Pharmacopoeia" records: "Nourishes yin without causing deficiency, enhances yang without overstimulating it." The "Correct Interpretation of Materia Medica" states: "Its flavor is heavy and pure, hence nourishes yin; containing yang within yin, it also nourishes qi. Thus, it nourishes yin without causing deficiency, supports yang without causing excess." Clinical evidence confirms that goji berries stimulate sexual function. Therefore, married adult males who travel frequently or stay away from home for long periods, separated from their spouses, should avoid eating too many goji berries, as this may increase libido and trigger sexual excitement. Moreover, since goji berries nourish essence, they might even cause nocturnal emissions. Hence, ancient people warned: "Do not eat goji berries when away from home for thousands of miles."
