Understanding TCM Prescriptions for Autumn-Winter Health Preservation
With the arrival of autumn and winter, temperatures drop, winds turn cold and dry, and health should receive increased attention. Effective health preservation during this season is essential. Below are several TCM-based dietary remedies for winter health preservation to help you stay healthy through winter.
The first remedy is for children. During winter, children are prone to coughing and respiratory issues. Parents may give children boiled pear water, which provides excellent preventive benefits. Method: Take two Beijing white pears, wash without peeling, remove cores, cut into chunks. Add 3 taels (9 grams) of Fritillaria bulb (Chuanbei), add appropriate rock sugar, and boil together with 1,000 ml of boiling water. Cool after boiling. Regular consumption of this Chuanbei Pear Syrup during autumn and winter effectively relieves coughing, dissolves phlegm, and calms wheezing.
The second remedy is for women. Cold, dry winters make many women’s skin fragile and easily damaged, often accompanied by poor appetite. We recommend “Coix Seed Porridge.” Preparation is simple: Boil one liang (50 grams) of coix seed daily for breakfast. Long-term consumption of Coix Seed Porridge not only regulates appetite and protects skin but also shows certain therapeutic effects on skin conditions such as flat warts.
Elderly individuals commonly suffer from shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing, poor sleep, palpitations, etc., during autumn and winter. The following remedy offers significant health benefits: Use two parts walnuts, two parts black sesame seeds, four parts donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao), six parts yellow wine, and add sufficient water. Before preparation, crush Ejiao finely, and preferably mash walnuts. Mix all ingredients with yellow wine and water, steam in a steamer until Ejiao melts into a paste. Cool and consume. Elderly individuals should take one spoonful daily. This remedy nourishes the heart and lungs, regulates blood, and stops coughing. Long-term use yields noticeable results.
