Change Your Throat Clearing Habit
★ Individual vocal abilities vary across pitch (frequency range), loudness (vocal cord tension), and duration (sound production time). Exceeding these limits risks vocal cord damage. Teachers with low voices should use amplifiers to avoid overstraining.
★ Avoid eating too much before teaching—overeating can cause vocal strain. Drink some plain water beforehand to lubricate the throat.
★ During menstruation and pregnancy, vocal cords undergo physiological changes. Tissues become delicate and heal slowly after injury. Voice rest is essential during these periods.
★ Habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, eating chili, or consuming cold drinks after singing karaoke harm the throat. Minimize or change these habits.
★ Stop clearing your throat habitually. Many do this to clear phlegm or clarify voice, but it causes sudden, severe vocal cord tightening, easily leading to injury.
★ After vocal cord polyp or nodules surgery, abstain from speaking for over two weeks. Otherwise, delayed mucosal recovery may cause permanent hoarseness.
★ When sick, especially if hoarse, rest your voice. Regular exercise strengthens immunity and helps prevent colds—key for preventing throat diseases.
★ Avoid shouting loudly to reduce throat damage. Rest your voice after each class and maintain work-rest balance.
★ If you feel throat fatigue, hoarseness, or soreness, rest or seek treatment immediately—consult a doctor if needed.
★ In cold weather, wrap your neck with a scarf and wear a mask when outdoors to protect against direct cold air irritation.
★ Avoid medications with drying effects, such as antihistamines.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedies for Vocal Health
★ Hoarseness due to colds or sudden loud talking is considered “external pathogen-induced” in TCM. Eat more refreshing, moistening foods like fresh fruits, radish, spinach, etc.
Recommended for external pathogen-induced hoarseness:
Radish Ginger Juice: Grate one white radish, extract juice, mix with a little ginger juice, stir well and drink as a beverage.
Bai He Da Hai Drink: Use 2–3 pieces of fritillary bulb, steep in boiling water, add a little rock sugar when drinking—treat as tea.
★ Chronic hoarseness from prolonged loud shouting is classified as “deficiency of yin essence” in TCM. Consume lean meats, duck meat, eggs, dairy products, etc. Avoid spicy and grilled foods, and strictly refrain from alcohol.
Recommended beverages:
Lily Porridge: 30 grams fresh lily (or dried), cook until nearly done, add starch to thicken into porridge, sweeten with a little rock sugar before serving.
Fall Pear Paste: Available commercially; consume daily.
