Master Sun Simiao’s Health Preservation Methods
Master Sun Simiao was born during the Western Wei Dynasty and is traditionally believed to have lived to 141 years before passing away. His longevity secrets must have been exceptional. In fact, Sun Simiao was frail in childhood and fell ill frequently, prompting him to study medicine. He compiled two monumental medical works—“Qianjin Yaofang” and “Qianjin Yifang”—based on clinical experience and medical theories from before the Tang Dynasty. His health preservation methods may greatly benefit you.
Brush Hair Often
Interlock palms and rub them 36 times until warm, then sweep from forehead upward across the back of the head to the neck. Perform this 10 times each morning and evening. The head contains many vital acupoints; regular hair brushing helps prevent headaches, tinnitus, gray hair, and hair loss.
Move Eyes Frequently
Close eyes, then forcefully open them while rotating the eyeballs clockwise to look left, up, right, and down. Close eyes again, forcefully open them, rotate eyes counterclockwise to look right, up, left, and down. Repeat three times. This practice supports eye health and helps correct myopia.
Chew Teeth Often
Close mouth slightly, gently tap upper and lower teeth together without excessive force, but ensure audible sound. Perform 36 repetitions. This stimulates the meridians between jaw bones, keeps the mind alert, enhances gastrointestinal absorption, and prevents tooth decay and bone degeneration.
Rinse Jade Fluid (Saliva)
Close mouth slightly, extend tongue beyond teeth, slowly rotate from top to left for 12 circles, then swallow saliva. Repeat 12 circles in reverse direction. From a modern scientific perspective, saliva contains abundant enzymes that regulate hormone secretion, thus strengthening the gastrointestinal system.
Stimulate Ears Often
Place palms over both ears, press inward firmly, then release with a “puff” sound. Repeat 10 times. Then cover ears with hands, fold ears backward, use index fingers to tap the Fengchi acupoint at the back of the head 10 times. Perform this before sleeping and upon waking to enhance memory and hearing.
Swing Waist Often
Move body and arms rhythmically. When turning left, place right hand forward and left hand behind; lightly pat the lower abdomen with the front right hand and the “Mingmen” acupoint with the rear left hand. Repeat in the opposite direction. Perform at least 50 times, ideally 100. This strengthens the gastrointestinal tract, consolidates kidney energy, prevents indigestion, stomach pain, and back pain.
Rub Abdomen Often
Rub hands 36 times until warm, then cross hands and rub clockwise around the navel. Gradually increase rubbing area. Perform 36 times. This aids digestion, absorption, and relieves abdominal bloating.
Contract the Anal Sphincter (Kegel Exercise)
Inhale and tighten anal muscles. Hold breath briefly, until discomfort arises, then exhale and relax. Can be practiced anytime. Best done 20–30 times morning and evening. This exercise was reportedly the favorite health technique of Emperor Qianlong, known as the “Ten Perfections.”
Twist Knees Often
Stand feet together, knees touching tightly, slightly squatting. Place hands on knees and twist left and right, 20 times each side. This strengthens knee joints. As the saying goes, “Old age begins with weak legs; kidney deficiency first affects knees.” To prolong life, start with the legs.
Massage Feet Often
Use right hand to rub left foot, left hand to rub right foot. From heel to toe and back to heel counts as one stroke; repeat 36 times. Then alternately rub the Yongquan acupoint on the sole with both thumbs, 100 times. The soles contain reflex zones for all organs; regular foot massage strengthens organs, treats insomnia, lowers blood pressure, and relieves headaches.
