Benefits of Tea for Children
Some parents dislike letting children drink tea, fearing tea’s chemical components may negatively affect children’s healthy development. However, this concern is unfounded. Tea contains phenolic derivatives, caffeine, vitamins, proteins, sugars, aromatic compounds, and trace elements like zinc and fluoride—all essential for children’s growth. The issue isn’t whether children can drink tea, but how to do so properly. With reasonable consumption, tea benefits children’s health equally.
Based on children’s age and developmental characteristics, daily tea intake should not exceed 2–3 small cups, preferably consumed during the day and slightly diluted and warm. Children, due to immature digestive systems and tendency to overeat, benefit from moderate tea consumption, which enhances intestinal motility, stimulates digestive fluid secretion, and improves digestion. As commonly said, tea “cleans the head, aids digestion, and promotes urination.” This applies to children too. Children easily develop internal heat and constipation. Compared to other cooling methods, tea is the best beverage because tea is “bitter and cold,” possessing heat-clearing and detoxifying effects. Tea’s trace elements are vital for bone, nail, tooth, and hair growth. Moderate tea consumption strengthens bones and helps prevent dental caries.
Children should not drink excessive, overly strong, or cold tea. Overconsumption increases bodily fluids, burdening the heart and kidneys. Strong tea causes excessive excitement, rapid heartbeat, and insomnia. Children are still developing, with immature organ systems requiring ample sleep and rich nutrition. Cold tea has adverse effects such as stagnation and phlegm accumulation. Children’s organs are delicate and immunity weak, making them prone to abdominal pain.
Therefore, parents must tailor tea consumption to their child’s actual needs, ensuring moderation and scientific timing.
