Preventing Low Back Pain Is Key

The Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has achieved remarkable efficacy using massage as the primary therapy in treating low back pain, with continuous improvement in overall massage expertise. However, experts emphasize that the most critical measure for low back pain is prevention.
Various causes of low back pain have high incidence rates. Although numerous treatments exist, there is currently no "miracle cure." Through generations of effort, the hospital’s massage department has accumulated extensive experience in treating various conditions. For patients with lumbar-sacral pain and cervical spondylosis, they use massage combined with acupuncture, cupping, traction, microwave therapy, semiconductor laser therapy, and herbal steam therapy—achieving significant results. For acute lumbar sprains, they apply massage exercises or Mian needle penetration combined with spinal manipulation. For cervical spondylosis, they combine manual therapy, acupuncture, cervical traction, and internal herbal medicine. For lumbar disc herniation, they use conventional massage techniques combined with posterior spinal manipulation and stretching, supplemented by acupuncture, cupping, spinal traction, and herbal baths—becoming a specialty of the department and earning patient trust.
Experts point out that Traditional Chinese Medicine has always emphasized "preventing illness before it occurs, prevention over treatment," applicable to low back pain as well. The lumbar region has complex anatomy, abundant soft tissues, wide range of motion, and heavy load-bearing, making it prone to injury. By paying attention to personal differences in age, gender, constitution, and work conditions, and properly protecting the waist, the incidence, severity, and recurrence rate of low back pain can be significantly reduced. Prevention measures should not only focus on occupational protection but especially on daily habits involving standing, sitting, lying, and walking.
Experts caution that women with low back pain should avoid wearing high heels. A heel height of about 3 cm is suitable. For every 1 cm increase in heel height, lumbar extension and back muscle contraction double, greatly increasing the risk of low back pain. Additionally, improper walking posture when going up or down stairs may result in sudden "stepping into empty space" and strain. Proper walking posture can prevent and treat low back pain. Furthermore, engaging in feasible sports like swimming, supine leg lifts, backward walking, combined with self-massage of the waist, enhances blood circulation in the waist, strengthens back muscles, and reduces recurrence of low back pain symptoms.
