Eating Starchy Foods to Suppress Colon Cancer

Eating Starchy Foods to Suppress Colon Cancer
British nutritionists analyzed dietary habits and cancer incidence across ten countries. Results showed that higher consumption of starchy foods correlates with lower rates of small intestine, colon, and rectal cancers. Researchers believe starchy foods suppress colon cancer through two mechanisms: first, when starch enters the intestines, it undergoes reactions that increase fecal bulk, promoting colonic excretion and accelerating the removal of carcinogenic metabolic byproducts; second, starch ferments in the gut to produce large amounts of butyrate, which inhibits potentially carcinogenic cells in the colon lining. Experiments have proven butyrate is an effective inhibitor of cancer cell growth. Experts advise not to forget starchy foods at each meal.
