Folk Remedies for Osteoporosis

After age 35, total bone mass gradually decreases, about 10%–15% every decade. The decline is especially pronounced after menopause in women and around age 60 in men. Early signs include shortening of height, loose teeth, which may progress to generalized bone pain. Due to reduced bone density, bones become more brittle, leading to fractures even without trauma or minor injury. Compression fractures of the spine are most common. Even slight movements such as climbing stairs or turning can cause femoral fractures. Severe cases may lead to deformities such as kyphosis, short stature, protruding lower abdomen, anterior pelvic tilt, flexion deformities of knees and hips, stiff ankles, inversion, and slow, small steps with unstable gait. This condition is clinically known as "osteoporosis." Age-related bone loss is termed "physiological osteoporosis," while fracture and deformity resulting from disease are classified as "pathological osteoporosis." Commonly used traditional formulas are as follows.
[Formula One] 750g chicken, 50g soybeans, 50g walnuts, 2 scallions, 2 slices ginger, 15ml yellow wine, salt and pepper to taste. Clean chicken, cut into pieces; soak soybeans. Tie scallions into knots. Place all ingredients except pepper into a steamer pot, add water to two-thirds full, steam over low heat for 2 hours. Serve with a dash of pepper added.

[Formula Two] 1000g pork bone broth, 2 tofu blocks, 1 egg, 25g dried shrimp, scallions, ginger, garlic, cooking oil, salt, monosodium glutamate to taste. Beat egg in a bowl with a little water and salt, steam until set, keep aside. Cut tofu into small cubes. Heat oil, fry garlic until fragrant, add a little oil, stir-fry, then add pork bone broth and dried shrimp. Once boiling, ladle the steamed egg into soup in large spoonfuls, add tofu, bring to boil again, then add scallions, salt, and MSG. Serve.

[Formula Three] 500g soybean sprouts, 500g pork ribs, 2 slices ginger, 15ml yellow wine, salt, MSG, pepper to taste. Pressure-cook pork rib soup in advance. Wash and trim soybean sprouts, cut in half. Stir-fry quickly over high heat until oily, transfer to clay pot, add soup and yellow wine, simmer gently for 30 minutes, then add MSG and pepper.

[Formula Four] 3 sea cucumbers, 200g lean pork, 10g dried shrimp, 2 eggs, 50g bean thread, 500ml chicken stock, ginger, scallions, alcohol, sugar, salt, MSG, sesame oil to taste. Soak sea cucumber in water, clean, remove internal organs, cut into halves. Mix minced pork and dried shrimp with salt, stuff into sea cucumber cavity. Beat eggs into thin omelet, cut into strips. Heat oil, sauté ginger and scallions until fragrant, remove, change oil, briefly pan-sear sea cucumber, add alcohol, sugar, salt, bean thread, egg strips, and chicken stock, cook for 10 minutes. Add egg strips, scallion greens, and MSG, serve topped with sesame oil.
