External Application Formula for Treating Alopecia Areata
Commercial Chinese patent medicines include: 10% Cantharidin Tincture, 20% Psoralea Tincture, 25% Zanthoxylum Tincture, 101 Hair Regrowth Essence, Alopecia Growth Water, etc. Other formulas:⑴ Garlic external application: Garlic has pungent, warming properties and functions to dispel wind, relieve cold, calm nerves, and relieve itching. It contains sulfur-rich essential oils that stimulate nerves, enhance blood circulation, and induce sweating.⑵ Ginger external application: Ginger contains "gingerol," which stimulates nerves and dilates skin and mucosal blood vessels, improving circulation. Fresh ginger juice can be extracted and applied using a small brush to bald patches, three times daily.⑶ Fresh Eclipta prostrata washed clean, juice extracted naturally, applied to affected areas 3–5 times daily.⑷ Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves dried in shade, ground into powder, mixed with sesame oil for external rubbing.⑸ Glycerin-red-skinned garlic juice: Fresh red-skinned garlic peeled and crushed to extract juice; mix garlic juice and glycerin in ratio 3:2, then apply externally to balding areas.⑹ Pinellia ternata dipped in vinegar and applied externally.⑺ Raw Aconite powder 50 grams, mixed with vinegar for external application, once in the morning and once at night.⑻ Pomelo seeds 15 grams, soaked in hot water for half an hour, then applied externally to affected areas.⑼ Cordyceps sinensis 30 grams, soaked in 100 ml white wine for one week, filtered to obtain juice, applied externally to affected areas five times daily.⑽ Banjin Wine: 9 Cantharidin insects, 30 grams purple hibiscus bark, 12 grams camphor, 300 ml white wine, soaked for two weeks, then applied externally.⑾ Cantharidin 7 grams, Psoralea corylifolia and Fructus Cnidii each 12 grams, fresh Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves 30 grams. All four herbs chopped and soaked in 500 ml of 75% alcohol or regular liquor for one week, then used externally.⑿ Red chili peppers, fresh ginger chunks, and Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves each 15 grams, soaked in one cup of white wine overnight, strained to extract juice mixed with a little wine, applied to affected areas morning and evening.⒀ Chamaecyparis Liquid Wine: Each 15 grams of Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves, Angelica sinensis root tips, Cuscuta chinensis, and ginger, soaked in white wine (covering the herbs), left for one week, then applied externally.⒁ Psoralea corylifolia and Polygonum multiflorum each 30 grams, Cuscuta chinensis and Stemonae tuber each 15 grams, soaked in 40-degree alcohol, filtered after one week, juice applied externally twice daily (morning and evening).⒂ Fresh Chamaecyparis obtusa leaves 90 grams, Kaempferia galanga 45 grams, 75% alcohol 700 ml, sealed in bottle and soaked for 7–10 days; use the cut surface of ginger to dip into the solution and rub vigorously on affected areas repeatedly.⒃ 21 flowers of Datura metel, fresh rhizome of Drynariae (bone-breaker) about the size of a finger, sliced into 17 pieces. Place both ingredients in a medium bowl, cover with sorghum wine, seal the bowl mouth with paper, place in a pot, steam over water for about one hour. Apply the medicinal wine to the affected area 4–5 times daily. After more than a month, hair may regrow. This medicine is toxic and must not be ingested.⒄ Sulfur, realgar, and Phoenix’s Eggshell each 15 grams, processed Balaustium 9 grams, talc powder and pork fat each 30 grams. Grind all into fine powder, mix with pork fat and pig bile juice into a paste, wrap in gauze, and rub onto affected areas 2–3 times daily for 1–2 weeks continuously.⒅ Ginseng leaf, Chamaecyparis obtusa leaf, and Dictamnus bark each 12 grams, soaked in sorghum wine for one week, then applied externally to affected areas three times daily.⒆ Psoralea corylifolia 25 grams, Eclipta prostrata 25 grams, 75% alcohol 200 ml, soaked for one week, then applied externally several times daily.⒇ Ginger 6 grams, raw Pinellia ternata (powdered) 15 grams. First rub ginger on the affected area for one minute, wait briefly, then rub again for one or two minutes, followed by applying the powdered raw Pinellia mixed with fragrant oil.
