Bitter Apricot Kernel

It is the dried mature seed of Prunus armeniaca L. var. ansu Maxim., Prunus sibirica L., Prunus mandshurica Koehne, or Prunus armeniaca L., all belonging to the Rosaceae family. Harvest mature fruits in summer, remove pulp and shell, extract seeds, and dry under sunlight.
【Characteristics】Flat heart-shaped, 1–1.9 cm long, 0.8–1.5 cm wide, 0.5–0.8 cm thick. Surface ranges from yellowish-brown to dark brown; one end pointed, the other rounded and thickened, asymmetrical. A short linear hilum on the pointed side; numerous deep brown veins extending upward from the rounded end at the chalaza. Seed coat thin; two cotyledons, white and oily. Odorless, taste bitter.
【Flavor, Nature, and Meridian Affinity】Bitter, slightly warm; mildly toxic. Enters the Lung and Large Intestine meridians.
【Function and Indications】Promotes Qi descent, stops coughing and wheezing, moistens intestines to relieve constipation. Used for cough with wheezing, chest fullness, excessive phlegm, and constipation due to blood deficiency and dryness.
【Dosage and Administration】4.5–9g; when used in decoctions, add later.
【Note】Do not exceed recommended dosage orally to avoid poisoning.
【Storage】Store in a cool, dry place, protected from insects.
