Postpartum abdominal pain
Postpartum abdominal pain refers to injury to blood after childbirth, deficiency of Chong and Ren meridians, lack of nourishment to the uterine vessels, or insufficient blood and qi leading to poor circulation and stagnation causing pain. Symptoms include dull lower abdominal pain that improves with pressure, scanty lochia with pale color, dizziness, tinnitus, and weak, fine pulse. Commonly used traditional remedies are as follows.
[Formula One]
Danggui, Xuduan, Rougui, Chuanxiong, Ganjiang, Maidong each 40 grams, Shaoyao 60 grams, Wuzhuyu, Ganyu each 100 grams, Gancao, Baizhi each 30 grams, Huangqi 40 grams, 20 jujubes, 2000 ml wine. Grind all herbs finely, pack in cloth, soak in clean container with wine overnight, add 1000 ml water, boil down to 150 ml, set aside. Take 15–20 ml warm before meals, three times daily.
This formula treats postpartum deficiency and abdominal pain.
[Formula Two]
Dangshen, Baizhu, Fuling, Zhi Gancao, Shudi, Bai Shao each 10 grams, Danggui 15 grams, Chuanxiong 7.5 grams, one mature hen, 500 grams pork, 500 grams miscellaneous bones, a little green onion and ginger. Process the hen conventionally, chop the pork, crush the bones, wash the remaining herbs, wrap in clean gauze, soak in water, place the hen, pork, bones, and herb bag into a pot, add sufficient water, bring to a boil over high heat, skim off foam, add ginger and green onion, then simmer over low heat until the chicken is tender. Remove the herb bag, consume the meat and broth.
This formula is suitable for postpartum abdominal pain due to blood deficiency and qi weakness.
[Formula Three]
Liyu Lin 200 grams. Wash fish scales, add sufficient water, simmer gently until forming a gel-like consistency. Take 60 grams each time, dissolve in yellow wine, warm and drink, twice daily.
This formula treats abdominal pain due to postpartum blood stasis.
[Formula Four]
A few crabs, wash thoroughly, place in bowl, steam until nearly cooked, add 1–2 tablespoons rice wine, steam briefly more. Drink the broth, eat crab meat (can be dipped in seasoned oil, soy sauce, monosodium glutamate, etc.).
This formula treats abdominal pain due to postpartum blood stasis.
[Formula Five]
Sheng Niuxi 200 grams, 3000 ml wine. Boil with wine to extract 1200 ml of decoction, filter out residue. If using dried Niuxi root, soak in wine overnight, then boil; take in divided doses according to personal tolerance.
This formula treats severe abdominal pain after childbirth.
[Formula Six]
Danggui, Yimucao each 30 grams, Chuanxiong, Taoren, Gancao, Danpi each 10 grams, Pao Jiang 5 grams, Bai Mi 50 ml. Boil first seven ingredients with 500 ml water until reduced to 300 ml, filter out residue, add white honey to form a paste. Take 30 ml each time, three times daily.
This formula treats cold abdominal pain with refusal to press due to postpartum blood deficiency and cold invasion.
[Formula Seven]
Zelan 30 grams, Jingmi 50 grams. First boil Zelan, filter out residue, use the juice to cook rice porridge, consume on an empty stomach.
This formula treats abdominal pain due to postpartum stasis.
[Formula Eight]
Honglanhua 30 grams, 2000 ml wine. Soak herbs in wine, boil until volume halved, consume half immediately; if pain persists, repeat.
This formula treats stabbing abdominal pain due to wind pathogen invading the abdomen after childbirth.
[Formula Nine]
Danggui, Shanyao, Xuduan, Shudi each 15 grams, Ejiao 9 grams, Renshen 6–9 grams, Maidong 9–15 grams, Rougui 3 grams, Gancao 3–6 grams.
Decoct with water, take one dose per day, twice daily.
This formula treats abdominal pain due to qi and blood deficiency.
[Formula Ten]
One wild chicken, appropriate amount of flour. Remove feathers and internal organs, wash, take meat, mince into filling, season. Mix flour with water to make dough, wrap dumplings, boil until cooked, consume on an empty stomach.
This formula treats abdominal pain due to postpartum physical weakness.
[Formula Eleven]
100 grams lean mutton, 50 grams fresh Shan Yao, 100 grams rice. Cook mutton and fresh Shan Yao separately until extremely soft, mash into paste, mix together in mutton broth, then cook with rice into porridge, consume on an empty stomach.
This formula treats postpartum cold hernia abdominal pain.
[Formula Twelve]
300 grams hawthorn cake, 50 grams starch, 50 grams refined flour, 150 grams sugar, 30 grams honey, 500 grams vegetable oil (actual consumption 50 grams). Mix starch and flour with water to form a paste, cut hawthorn cake into finger-sized strips, mix evenly with paste, fry one by one in oil heated to six or seven degrees until golden brown. In another pan, add a small amount of water, sugar, and honey, simmer over low heat until syrup thickens, add hawthorn strips, stir well, cool, store in bottle, take 2–3 times daily.

[Formula Thirteen]
Gui Pi 6–9 grams, appropriate amount of brown sugar. Decoct with water, one dose per day, divide into two servings.

[Formula Fourteen]
200 grams pig liver, 20 grams Wu Yi powder, appropriate amount of flour. Wash pig liver, slice along liver veins, mix Wu Yi powder into slices, coat with flour mixed with water, wrap externally with damp paper, roast in hot ash until cooked through, remove paper and flour, consume on an empty stomach.
This formula treats postpartum waist and umbilical abdominal pain.
