How to Treat Infertility with Acupuncture
(1) Azoospermia: ① Select Guanyuan, Qihai, Mingmen, Shenshu, Zusanli; use ginger-separated moxibustion, apply reinforcing technique. ② Select Shenshu, Jinggong (1.5 cun lateral to Shenshu), Guanyuan, Zusanli, Xuehai; acupuncture every other day, retain needles for 30 minutes, rotate every 5 minutes, use balanced reinforcing-reducing method. Moxibustion for 20 minutes at Shenshu, Jinggong, and Guanyuan. ③ Select Mingmen and Shenshu, Yaoyangguan and Sanyinjiao; alternate two groups every other day, use acupuncture plus moxibustion of 5 moxa cones.
(2) Oligospermia: Choose Dahu, Qugu, Sanyinjiao, Guanyuan, or Shangliao, Zhongliao, Shenshu, Mingmen; alternate two groups, apply reinforcing method. After obtaining qi sensation, use ginger-separated moxibustion of three moxa cones. One course lasts 15 days. During ginger-separated moxibustion, if the patient feels a wave of warmth spreading toward the perineum, the effect is better.
(3) Dead sperm and excessive sperm deformity: Select Qihai, Sanyinjiao, or Mingmen, Diji; alternate two groups, acupuncture once daily, retain needles for 15 minutes, perform needle manipulation once during retention. One course consists of 18 sessions.
(4) Thick and non-liquefied semen: Select Qihai, Shuidao, left Xingjian, right Sanyinjiao, or Zhongji, Yinlingquan, Daxi; alternate two groups, perform acupuncture three times per group before switching. Perform 7–10 sessions then recheck. Use balanced reinforcing-reducing method for abdominal points, reducing method for limb points. Retain needles for 15 minutes, perform needle manipulation once during retention.
Regardless of the type of semen abnormality causing infertility, patients should abstain from smoking, alcohol, limit tea, coffee, cola, and spicy foods like scallions and garlic during treatment. Combining with medication can enhance therapeutic efficacy.
