Sedative and Sleep-Aiding Formula 6
3 pears, 25 grams rock sugar. Wash the pears, peel them, slice them, and boil in water for 20 minutes. Add rock sugar to adjust sweetness. Divide into two portions and consume, drinking the broth and eating the pear.
The original formula treats "wind-heat invading the heart, causing restlessness, confusion, and unstable mental state." Wind-heat invading the heart disrupts the spirit, leading to restlessness, confusion, and insomnia. Treatment should focus on clearing heat, dispelling wind, calming the heart, and soothing the spirit. Pears are fruits from cultivated species of the Rosaceae family, including Pyrus bretschneideri, Pyrus pyrifolia, and Pyrus ussuriensis. They are sweet and slightly sour, with a cool nature, particularly effective in clearing heat, resolving phlegm, generating body fluids, and moistening dryness. Combined with rock sugar, which tonifies the spleen and moistens the lungs, the formula becomes one that clears heat, resolves phlegm, harmonizes the center, and calms the spirit. It is suitable for insomnia and restlessness due to phlegm-heat disturbing the heart or heat damage depleting body fluids and depriving the heart of nourishment. If wind pathogen is prominent, add mint and chrysanthemum to disperse wind.
