Sedative Formulations

Spirit unrest arises from two sources: first, deficiency of heart blood leading to lack of nourishment to the spirit—manifesting as insomnia, mental confusion, palpitations, and forgetfulness; second, excess heat in the heart and liver causing real syndrome—manifesting as mental agitation, insomnia with vivid dreams, mania, and irritability. Formulations primarily composed of heavy tranquilizing or nourishing sedatives, which calm the spirit and stabilize the will, are classified as sedative agents.
Sedative Agent Functions
The function of sedative agents is to calm the spirit and stabilize the will, nourish yin and blood. Used for treating conditions such as mental unease, restlessness, insomnia with vivid dreams, convulsions, epilepsy, and mania.
Classification of Sedative Agents
Sedative agents are divided into two categories: heart-calming sedatives and blood-nourishing sedatives.
Blood-Nourishing Sedatives: Suitable for deficiency syndromes presenting with palpitations, heart fluttering, forgetfulness, and insomnia—often due to excessive worry depleting heart blood, leading to inadequate spiritual nourishment; or liver yin deficiency causing internal fire. Treatment should focus on nourishing and calming the spirit. Formulations based on sour jujube seed, arborvitae seed, and schisandra berry, combined with herbs like rehmannia, anemarrhena, and ophiopogon to nourish yin and blood. Representative Chinese patent medicines include Sour Jujube Seed Sedative Granules, Nourishing Blood and Calming the Spirit Pills, and Brain Joy Sealing.
