Danggui Formula

Danggui is the root of a perennial herb of the Umbelliferae family. It contains folic acid, niacin, vitamin D12, vitamin E, etc. It has anti-anemia effects, improves blood circulation, increases coronary artery blood flow, and helps prevent and treat coronary heart disease. It also protects the liver and prevents depletion of liver glycogen. According to analysis of Emperor Qianlong’s longevity prescriptions, Danggui was used most frequently among his health-preserving formulas.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is considered warm in nature, sweet and pungent in taste. Its functions include nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, activating blood and relieving pain, moistening the intestines and promoting bowel movements. It is suitable for blood deficiency, physical weakness, menstrual irregularities, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, cold abdominal pain, injuries from falls or blows, blood stasis pain, rheumatic arthralgia, carbuncles and sores, blood stagnation pain, and constipation due to intestinal dryness.
Dosage: 5–15 grams. Use Danggui body (root) for blood tonification; use Danggui tail (tip) for promoting blood circulation and removing stasis. After wine processing, its blood-activating effect is enhanced.
However, avoid use in cases of excessive dampness, fullness in the middle energizer, or loose stools.
