Various Treatments for Angina Pectoris

Angina pectoris1
This condition is characterized clinically by paroxysmal pressure or pain in the chest due to acute and temporary myocardial ischemia and hypoxia caused by inadequate coronary artery perfusion.
Episodes typically occur during physical exertion, emotional excitement, cold exposure, overeating, or smoking. Diagnosis can be confirmed when electrocardiogram shows signs of myocardial ischemia during attacks.
[Formula I]
Shanzhi, Taoren each 12g, refined honey 30g. Grind both herbs into powder, mix with honey to form a paste. Spread the paste on the precordial area, cover with gauze. Change dressing every 3 days for the first week, then weekly thereafter. One course lasts 6 applications.
[Formula II]
Gualou, Xiebai each 12g, moderate amount of white wine. Decoct all three ingredients slowly, take twice daily after meals.
[Formula III]
Old Ficus root 30g, Artemisia root 15g, Phyllanthus root 30g. Boil all herbs together. Take after meals, 6 days per week, continuous for 4 weeks as one course.
[Formula IV]
Unripe persimmons 1000g, honey 2000g. Wash persimmons, remove calyx, chop finely, mash, squeeze juice through sterilized gauze. Transfer juice to a sandpot, boil first with high heat, then reduce to low heat until thickened. Add honey, continue cooking until sticky. Stop heating, cool, bottle. Dissolve in hot water, take 1 tablespoon each time, three times daily.
[Formula V]
Yuzhu, ShanZha each 500g, sugar powder, white dextrin as needed. Decoct ShanZha twice, 15 minutes each time; Yuzhu twice, 30 minutes each time. Combine decoctions, let settle, collect supernatant, concentrate into syrup. Mix with three times the volume of sugar solution and one time the volume of white dextrin. Stir evenly, granulate, dry, sieve. Take 22g each time, dissolve in hot water, three times daily.
[Formula VI]
Danshen 30g, white wine 500g. Soak. Take 10ml before meals, twice to thrice daily.
[Formula VII]
Bai Guo Ye, Gualou, Danshen each 15g, Xiebai 12g, Yu Jin 10g, Gancao 5g. Decoct and take orally, twice daily, morning and evening.
[Formula VIII]
Red Ginseng 6g, Mai Dong 6g, Huang Qi 6g, Chen Pi 5g. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, start in late autumn, continue until spring of next year.
[Formula IX]
Bajiao Hua 250g, pig heart 1 piece. Place both ingredients in a clay pot, add adequate water, stew for 2 hours. Drink soup, eat heart, one dose daily, continue for several days.
[Formula X]
Sheng Shan Zhi 15g, Sanqi powder 3g. Soak in boiling water for half an hour. Drink as tea, one dose daily, continue for several days.
[Formula XI]
Tao Zhi 1 bunch, wine 500ml. Cut Tao Zhi into small strips, add to wine, decoct to half a mililitre; swallow immediately.
[Formula XII]
Appropriate amount of barley root hairs. Crush into powder, make tablets, 50mg per tablet. Take 2–4 tablets each time, three times daily.
[Formula XIII]
Fresh lotus root as needed, glutinous rice 100g. Slice and crush lotus root, mix with water, let settle, extract powder. Take 30g lotus root powder, combine with glutinous rice to cook porridge. Eat twice daily, morning and evening.
[Formula XIV]
Pork knuckle 250g, pickled mustard 250g. Remove skin and fat, stew until tender, shred, add pickled mustard strands, reheat. Add monosodium glutamate and serve.
[Formula XV]
Danshen 30g, glutinous rice 50g, 3 red dates, small amount of brown sugar. Decoct Danshen, remove residue, add glutinous rice, red dates, and brown sugar to cook porridge. Serve warm, twice daily. One course lasts 10 days, pause 3 days before repeating.
[Formula XVI]
One walnut, one jujube. Remove kernels, wrap in paper, bake until soft. Chew slowly with ginger tea.
[Formula XVII]
Western ginseng, Chuan Sanqi 10g, Chicken Internal Gold, Amomum, Pearl Powder each 10g, Musk 0.3g. Grind all herbs into fine powder, mix evenly. Take 2g each time, orally 2–3 times daily.
This formula is Professor Sheng Guorong’s experience prescription from Fujian College of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
[Formula XVIII]
Yanhusuo, Wulingzhi, Caoguo, Mo Yao. Equal parts ground into powder. Take 6–9g each time.
[Formula XIX]
Huang Qi 30g, Danggui, Bai Shao each 12g, Chuan Xiong 9g, Sheng Di 15g, Zhi Gancao 6g. Decoct and take orally. One dose daily, twice daily.
This formula is a secret prescription by veteran TCM physician Liu Yuying for treating angina.
[Formula XX]
Banana 50g, small amount of honey. Peel banana, mash, mix with equal amount of tea water, add honey and stir evenly. Drink frequently throughout the day.
[Formula XXI]
Portulaca, leek in equal amounts, scallions, ginger, lard, soy sauce, salt, eggs as needed. Wash Portulaca and leek, air-dry for 2 hours, chop finely. Scramble eggs, break into small pieces. Mix Portulaca, leek, and eggs together, add salt, soy sauce, lard, MSG, minced scallions and ginger as filling. Make dumplings with dough, steam until cooked. Consume according to appetite.
[Formula XXII]
Sanqi powder 3g, Cinnamon powder 1.5g, Danggui 30g. Prepare Danggui decoction, use to dissolve and take Sanqi and cinnamon powders. Divide into three doses daily.
[Formula XXIII]
Ginkgo leaf 5g. Wash, chop finely, steep in boiling water for half an hour. Take once daily as tea.
[Formula XXIV]
25 eggs, Cinnabar 3g, Pearl powder 3g. Boil eggs until hard, remove yolks, place in pan, stir-fry over low heat until black smoke appears. Wrap in double-layered gauze, press to extract yolk oil. Repeat frying process once more. Then mix Cinnabar and pearl powder into yolk, stir well. Take one dose daily, continue for 10 doses.
[Formula XXV]
Dried winter mushroom 20 pieces, 8 red dates, cooking wine, refined salt, MSG, ginger slices, peanut oil as needed. Select 20 quality dried winter mushrooms, rinse under cold water to remove dirt; wash red dates. Use a covered stew bowl, add water, mushrooms, dates, salt, MSG, cooking wine, ginger slices, a little peanut oil. Seal with wax paper, boil rapidly for about 1 hour, then remove from stove.
Winter mushrooms contain high levels of carbohydrates, protein, trace elements, and various organic acids. They also contain anticancer substances that enhance the body's ability to inhibit tumors and strengthen anti-cancer effects. Commonly used as adjunct therapy for various cancers. They can suppress serum and hepatic cholesterol elevation, helping prevent cardiovascular diseases. The ergosterol they contain can convert into vitamin D2 under ultraviolet light, preventing rickets. Their arginine content helps prevent ulcers in the liver and gastrointestinal systems. According to TCM, winter mushrooms are sweet and neutral. They benefit Qi and stimulate appetite. Often used to treat various deficiencies, poor appetite, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cancer, and gastric or duodenal ulcers.
[Formula XXVI]
Danggui 10g, Chisha 12g, Danshen 15g, Honghua 10g, Taoren 10g, Shan Zha 30g, Guang Yujin 15g, Jiangxiang 9g, Chuan Xiong 12g. If pain is severe, add Shixiao San, Yanhusuo, and appropriately use Ru Xiang, Mo Yao; if there are ecchymoses or petechiae on the tongue, add E Zhu, San Leng, and appropriately use Shui Zhi; if chest tightness is severe, add Tan Xiang, Xiang Fu, Pian Jiang Huang, Su Luo Zi; if epigastric distension and frequent sighing, add Chai Hu, Bai Shao, Ji Ke, Chuan Lian, He Huan Pi; if epigastric distension and pain with belching, add Zhi Ke, Hou Po, Fa Ban Xia, Su Geng, Chen Pi, Sha Ren. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula promotes qi movement, activates blood circulation, unblocks collaterals, and relieves pain. Used for angina symptoms: stabbing or cramping chest pain recurring frequently, sometimes occurring at night, fixed location, radiating to the left shoulder and inner arm, severe pain causing cold limbs, sweating, pale face, blue lips, or oppressive fullness in the chest. Tongue may show purple hue or ecchymosis, pulse stringy or stagnant or intermittent.
[Formula XXVII]
Gualou 30g, Xiebai 12g, Fa Ban Xia 10g, Bai Kou Ren 9g, Zhi Ke 6g, Shi Changpu 9g, Gui Zhi 9g, Honghua 10g, Chuan Xiong 10g, Guang Yujin 10g. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula clears phlegm, stops nausea, unblocks collaterals, and benefits arthralgia. Suitable for angina. Symptoms: chest oppression like obstruction and distension, or intermittent dull pain, nausea, epigastric fullness. White greasy or turbid tongue coating, dark purple tongue, stringy slippery or deep slippery pulse.
[Formula XXVIII]
Xiebai 15g, Gui Zhi 10g, Bi Ba 10g, Liang Jiang 9g, Xi Xin 6g, Xiang Fu 9g, Xue Jie 9g, Ru Xiang 10g, Mo Yao 9g. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula warms and disperses cold, activates collaterals, and relieves pain. Applicable for angina. Symptoms: constricting chest pain, discomfort, easily triggered by cold, or chest pain radiating to back, cold aversion, pale face, cold extremities; white or greasy coating, pale purple tongue, deep slow pulse.
[Formula XXIX]
Huang Qi 15g, Dang Shen, Zhi Gancao 6g, Chuan Xiong 10g, Danggui 9g, Bai Shao each 10g, Honghua 10g, Guang Yujin 10g. If loose stools, add Huai Shan Yao, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Lian Rou; if red tongue, dry mouth, insomnia, spontaneous sweating, combine Shengmai San, appropriately add Mai Dong, Sheng Di, Yu Zhu, Dan Shen, Wu Wei Zi, Suan Zao Ren; if chest pain, chest tightness, frequent sighing, add Zhi Ke, Pian Jiang Huang, Xiang Yuan Pi, Fo Shou Pian, Shixiao San, or intermittently take Sanqi powder; if chest tightness and greasy coating, add Cang Zhu, Chuan Pu, Fa Ban Xia, Gua Lou Pi, Shi Changpu. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula tonifies Qi, opens meridians, regulates qi, and activates blood. Suitable for angina. Symptoms: chest tightness and shortness of breath, possibly accompanied by chest pain, easily triggered by exertion, relieved at rest, dizziness, palpitations, fatigue. Thin coating, slightly dark or purple-tinged tongue, fine weak pulse.

Sheng Di, Shu Di each 15g, Mai Dong 12g, Gou Qi Zi 12g, Zhi Shou Wu 10g, Shan Yu Rou 9g, Danggui, Bai Shao, Danshen each 10g, Yu Jin 12g. If shortness of breath, add Tai Zi Shen, Huang Jing; if palpitations and insomnia, add Yu Zhu, Suan Zao Ren, Wu Wei Zi, Ci Shi; if lower back and leg weakness, add Zhi Nüzhen, Zao Lian Cao, Sang Ji Sheng; if dizziness, facial flushing, limb numbness, appropriately add Tian Ma, Jun Teng, Bai Ji Li, Ju Hua, Xi Xian Cao, Dan Pi, Gui Ban, Zhen Zhu Mu; if chest irritability, burning pain, dry mouth, bitter taste, add Huang Lian, Gua Lou, Ge Gen, Chi Shao, Dan Pi. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula nourishes kidney and heart, activates blood, and unblocks collaterals. Suitable for angina. Symptoms: occasional stabbing or oppressive chest pain, dizziness, tinnitus, palpitations, insomnia, lower back pain, dry mouth, hot palms and soles. Red or dark tongue, possibly with ecchymosis or petechiae, scant or no coating, fine rapid or fine wiry pulse.
[Formula XXXI]
Huang Qi, Dang Shen each 10g, Xian Ling Pi 9g, Ba Ji Tian 9g, Du Zhong 8g, Shu Di 8g, Gou Qi Zi 10g, Gui Zhi 12g, Zhi Gancao 6g, Chuan Xiong 10g, Pian Jiang Huang 9g. If cold legs and frequent nocturnal urination, add Fu Pian, Lu Jiao Pian, Xian Mao; if poor appetite, indigestion, loose stools, add Gan Jiang, Bai Zhu; if slow or irregular pulse, add Ren Shen, Xi Xin, appropriately use Ma Huang; if red tongue, dry mouth, add Mai Dong, Sheng Di, Wu Wei Zi, Dan Shen; if obvious chest tightness and pain, add Bi Ba, Liang Jiang; if edema in lower limbs and shortness of breath, add Fu Pian, Bai Zhu, Chi Shao, Yi Mu Cao, Ting Li Zi. Decoct and take orally, one dose daily, divided into two servings.
This formula warms kidneys, tonifies Qi, activates blood, and opens meridians. Suitable for angina due to yang deficiency and blood stasis. Clinical symptoms: intermittent chest tightness, or chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, dyspnea with exertion, spontaneous sweating, fatigue, soreness in waist and knees, cold aversion, cold extremities, frequent nocturnal urination, dark lips. Pale purple, swollen tongue, deep fine or intermittent pulse.
[Formula XXXII]
Fresh carp or grass carp 250g, peas 10g, lean pork 30g, cooking wine 5g, pork broth or chicken broth 250g, ham 8g, egg white 10g, soy sauce 0.8g, ginger mince 1g, refined salt 2g, dried bamboo shoots 3g, dry starch 0.5g, MSG 0.3g. Steam ham until cooked, cut into fine threads; similarly cut bamboo shoots into fine threads; select peas; mince ginger; pound lean pork into fine paste; mix starch with one times its volume of water to form wet starch slurry. Clean the live fish, remove bones and spines, slice into small rectangular pieces. In the pork paste, add soy sauce, half egg white, one-third cooking wine, one-third salt, half MSG, half wet starch, and ginger mince, mix into filling. Mix remaining egg white with wet starch into a paste. Lay fish slices flat on cutting board, spread a thin layer of paste, place filling on top, roll up the fish slice. When reaching the opposite end, apply a little paste to seal tightly without unraveling. Bring chicken broth to a boil over high heat, reduce to simmer, briefly poach the rolled fish rolls to remove foam, keeping broth clear. Once cooked, add remaining seasonings and cut ham and bamboo shoot threads, bring to a boil again, then add peas to finish.
Contains protein 30.7g, fat 29.4g, carbohydrates 2g, energy 395 kcal, calcium 66mg, phosphorus 314mg, iron 4.1mg, carotene 0.16mg, thiamine 0.18mg, riboflavin 0.22mg, niacin 6.1mg, vitamin C 3mg.
