Effective Pharmacological Diet Formulas for Treating Neurasthenia
Traditional Chinese medicine holds that neurasthenia arises from emotional injury leading to stagnation of Qi flow. In years of clinical practice, many effective pharmacological diet formulas have been accumulated, illustrated as follows:
Lotus Seed and Pork Heart Soup: Decoct 15 grams of stir-fried Cassia seeds to extract juice, add 1 pork heart (sliced), 100 grams of lotus seeds with hearts, and simmer into a soup. Add a little salt for seasoning. Suitable for patients with irritability, anger, chest tightness, rib distension, dry mouth and bitter taste, constipation, dizziness, headache, red eyes, and tinnitus.
Orange Cake (according to *Food and Herbal Materia Medica*): 250 grams of oranges, peel and seeds removed, mixed with 50 grams of sugar, soaked for one day until the orange flesh is fully saturated with sugar. Then place in a pot and gently stew over low heat until the liquid evaporates. Cool, mash into paste, mix with appropriate amounts of sugar and roasted sesame powder, form a filling. Use 500 grams of buckwheat flour, moisten with water, knead into dough, divide into portions, fill, and pan-fry until cooked. Suitable for patients with emotional instability, depression, chest and rib distension, poor appetite, and menstrual irregularities.
Goji Berry and Jujube Boiled Eggs: 15 grams of goji berries, 6 jujubes, 1 bowl of water. Boil for 5 minutes after boiling, then crack in 1 egg, add a little sugar, consume daily. Suitable for dizziness, blurred vision, mental forgetfulness, insomnia, and vivid dreams.
Yi Gan Mai Zao Tang (according to *Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Chamber*): 10 grams of licorice, 30 grams of floating wheat, 6 jujubes. Place in two bowls of clean water and decoct until reduced to one bowl. Strain and drink the broth. Consume continuously for 5–7 days. Suitable for hallucinations, restlessness, insomnia, hot flashes, and night sweats.
Gancao Tianma Stewed Pig Brain: 10 grams of Gastrodia elata, 1 pig brain, adequate water. Steam over water until cooked. Consume once daily or every other day for 5–7 times. Suitable for dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, tinnitus, and those with hypertension or arteriosclerosis.
Bai He Ji Zi Tang (according to *Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Chamber*): 60 grams of lily, add 3 bowls of water, decoct to 2 bowls. Crack 2 eggs, remove yolks, beat yolks, pour into lily soup, stir well, bring to boil, add appropriate amount of rock sugar for seasoning. Divide and consume twice daily. Suitable for restlessness, anxiety, poor sleep, dizziness, blurred vision, hot palms and soles, tinnitus, lower back pain, and waist discomfort.
Cordyceps Stewed Water Duck: 1 water duck, cleaned after removing internal organs, insert 10 grams of Cordyceps sinensis into the abdominal cavity, sew up the incision, add sufficient water and stew until cooked. Season with salt and monosodium glutamate, consume with meals. Suitable for chronic illness with weakness, poor appetite, insomnia, impotence, and spermatorrhea.
The above pharmacological diets are mild in nature and can be used year-round based on symptoms. Patients may choose according to their specific conditions.
