Office Workers’ Lunch Cannot Be Compromised

🔑 Keywords: Health Food Therapy
Tight work schedules combined with long commutes mean many office workers must eat lunch at their desks—a source of great concern. Recently, Beijing media reported that some office workers have started going to KTVs to sing while having free buffet lunches. Although experts warn that this is unhealthy both nutritionally and digestively, it reflects the serious challenge of finding proper lunch options. To address this issue, we interviewed several nutritionists for advice.
Office Workers Struggle with Lunch
How do real office workers handle lunch? Our interviews revealed the following common scenarios:
Business lunches are too expensive: Some luxury office buildings have restaurants, but these are typically upscale, with average meal costs around tens of yuan. During lunchtime, we observed few customers at a barbecue restaurant on the basement floor of a certain office building. A worker dining there mentioned he only came because a friend visited; normally, he wouldn’t come due to cost—simply unaffordable.
Eating fast food saves time: “Entering a fast-food restaurant, paying, ordering, and finishing a meal takes less than half an hour. This allows time for a quick nap to regain energy for the afternoon.” A regular fast-food eater told reporters.
Boxed lunches are merely a compromise: Xiao, a worker at a company, said, “Although I know the hygiene of boxed lunches is questionable, I still have to accept the standard 7-yuan lunch provided by my company—this way, it’s convenient, saves time and money.”
Bringing lunch is somewhat inconvenient: Some office workers prepare meals the night before and store them in the office fridge, reheating them with a microwave at noon. While this option is hygienic, convenient, and economical, it requires preparation in advance and the food isn’t always fresh.
Lunches That Are Unhealthy Can Lead to Disease
Dr. Xu Yun, chief physician at the Nutrition and Food Hygiene Institute of Beijing CDC, said young people today face high work and life pressures but lack sufficient health awareness. Many female office workers avoid fast food for fear of gaining weight, so they just snack to get through lunch. Over time, this can lead to conditions like hypoglycemia and anemia. Men, on the other hand, consume too much fast food, leading to high triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein deficiency, increasing risks of degenerative diseases such as hypertension and diabetes—common among white-collar workers in their thirties.
Nutritional imbalance is another major issue arising from poor lunch choices. Dr. Hong Zhongxin, head of the Nutrition Department at Beijing Friendship Hospital, pointed out that business meal sets contain excessive meat, resulting in too much protein intake. Combined with high oil content in restaurant cooking, fat and calorie intake become excessive, easily causing obesity and elevated blood lipids. Dr. Xu noted that homemade meals stored for long periods lose nutritional value, especially vitamin C in vegetables. Eating such meals regularly may lead to vitamin deficiencies.
Because it’s hard to find satisfying lunches, many people place their hopes on dinner, contributing significantly to poor overall health. Dr. Xu warned that irregular eating patterns disrupt metabolism and cause digestive issues like poor appetite. People feel full after eating just a little, or experience stomach discomfort after eating.
Strategies for Healthier Lunches
While it’s difficult to eat healthier lunches due to objective constraints, it’s not impossible. Dr. Xu emphasized that consciously choosing food types during lunch can help achieve nutritional balance. For example, staple foods should never be missing—especially for those doing physical work in the afternoon. It’s best to eat more rice or noodles, whose carbohydrates release energy slowly, sustaining stamina over time. Office workers should prefer whole grains. Though dietary fiber in whole grains isn’t digested by the body, it aids bowel movement, clears waste, and promotes timely elimination of food residue.
For vegetables, she advised eating freshly cooked ones whenever possible, or choosing salad in fast food. Don’t assume that any vegetables in boxed or homemade meals suffice. Opt for legumes and sprouts, which are rich in nutrients. If only boxed meals are available, it’s best to eat fresh fruit about one hour after lunch to compensate for vitamin loss.
Dr. Hong cautioned against eating too much at lunch, as this diverts blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract, prolonging brain ischemia and hypoxia, thus impairing afternoon productivity.
