Guan Zhong's Theory on "Food" and "Spirit"

🔑 Keywords: Health-preserving Diet
Guan Zhong, a renowned statesman of the State of Qi during the Spring and Autumn Period, was not only skilled in governance but also highly accomplished in health preservation. He emphasized the impact of diet and vital energy (jing), spirit (shen), and mind on life.
He advocated the health-preserving methods of "moderate diet" and "light flavors," stating: "Imbalance in hunger and fullness leads to illness. Overeating causes physical strain; hunger prompts excessive thinking; old age demands long-term contemplation." He warned that unregulated eating leads to numerous diseases—overeating harms the body and may even endanger life. Especially for the elderly, dietary caution is crucial: eat less rather than more, particularly avoiding overfull evening meals. Consistent attention to dietary regulation ensures good health.

He also studied the effects of emotions such as worry, sorrow, joy, and anger, as well as self-cultivation on health. He said: "Worry disrupts order; anger destroys composure; accumulated worry injures the spirit; intense anger disperses the spirit; excessive joy or sorrow has the opposite effect." Guan Zhong especially stressed caution against anger, noting it causes severe harm to both body and mind. How to control anger? He believed: "All people live by joy; tranquility brings it, agitation loses it." Since anger arises from within, "calmness" is the key remedy. When faced with injustice causing rage, betrayal triggering unbearable frustration, career setbacks leading to suppressed anger, or family conflicts causing deep sorrow—remember the word "calmness": "Be content and carefree, act without effort, then the essence will naturally be preserved and generated." Calming the mind stops anger: first, it allows rational thinking to resolve issues thoroughly; second, it promotes self-cultivation and overall health.
