Seven Foods That Harm Sexual Function

🔑 Keywords: Pharmacological Diet
Mental state, illness, medication—all can affect libido. But certain foods, due to their inherent nature and flavor, may weaken desire if consumed excessively. Common "libido-damaging" foods in daily life include:
Lotus Seed Heart: Cold in nature, bitter in taste, non-toxic. Enters heart, lung, and spleen meridians. Its pharmacological effects include clearing heart fire, stopping seminal emission, arresting bleeding, and quenching thirst. Used for treating irritability, thirst, hemoptysis, seminal emission, red eyes, swelling, and pain. The alkaloids in lotus seed heart have heat-clearing, sedative, and essence-consolidating effects, treating high fever, restlessness, dream-related seminal emission, and nocturnal emission. Modern studies confirm lotus seed heart reduces sexual desire.
Winter Melon (also called Pillow Melon): Contains cellulose and niacin. Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Helps reduce sexual desire and clear heart heat. Modern medicine confirms regular consumption alleviates agitation and irritability. According to *Bencao Jing Shu*: "Winter melon absorbs the essence of yin earth and is exposed to frost and dew, hence sweet taste, slightly cold, and cold nature."
Water Chestnut (also called Water Lychee, Sand Horn): Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Has nourishing and strengthening effects on spirit and willpower, suppressing sexual desire in both men and women. *Shi Liao Bencao* states: "Among aquatic fruits, this one emits the strongest cold energy. Overconsumption harms yang, weakens male organ function."
Chinese Kale (also called Jade Turnip, Radish): Contains cellulose and carbohydrates. Sweet in taste, pungent in nature. Besides promoting diuresis, phlegm resolution, detoxification, and wind-dispelling, it also consumes vital energy. Long-term consumption suppresses sex hormone secretion. *Bencao Qiyuan* says: "Sweet and pungent, cold in nature—depletes qi and damages blood."
Bamboo Shoots: Naturally cold and astringent. High in oxalic acid, which interferes with calcium and zinc absorption and utilization. Excessive consumption leads to calcium and zinc deficiency—especially zinc deficiency, which severely impacts libido.
Alcohol: Severely harms sexual function. Chronic heavy drinking inhibits male hormone metabolism, reducing testosterone production. Men show decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, testicular atrophy, breast enlargement (gynecomastia); women experience difficulty achieving arousal, significantly reduced frequency and intensity of orgasm, even loss of orgasm, hormonal imbalance, menstrual irregularities, early menopause, atrophy of reproductive organs and external genitalia, reduced vaginal secretions, painful intercourse, and loss of interest in sex.
Tobacco: Excessive smoking in men impairs blood circulation in the penis, affecting erection—severe cases lead to erectile dysfunction—and causes sperm abnormalities. In women, excessive smoking damages ova, increasing risk of chromosomal abnormalities and ectopic pregnancy. It also disrupts female hormone secretion, causing menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, and low libido.
