TCM Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment for Irregular Menstruation
Menstrual cycle irregularities, such as premature or delayed periods, unpredictable timing, excessive or insufficient menstrual flow, dark purple or pale red color, thick or thin consistency, are collectively referred to as menstrual irregularity.
Western medicine considers menstrual irregularity mostly due to mild endocrine imbalance, with few effective adjustment methods. However, based on TCM syndrome differentiation, suitable patent medicines can be selected for regulation:
(1) For the blood stasis type: symptoms include delayed menstruation, reduced flow, dark purple blood with clots, distending pain in the lower abdomen that resists pressure, or stabbing pain, with pain decreasing after clot expulsion. The tongue appears dark purple or has ecchymoses. Treatment: activate blood and resolve stasis. Recommended medicines: San Qi Xue Shang Ning (Sanqi Blood Injury Relief), Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan (Cinnamon and Poria Pill), Yi Mu Wan (Motherwort Pill).
(2) For the blood deficiency type: symptoms include delayed menstruation, scanty flow, pale color, thin consistency, dizziness, blurred vision, palpitations, insomnia, pale complexion, and pale tongue with little coating. Treatment: tonify blood and qi. Recommended medicines: San Qi Jin Fu Ke Chao Pian (Sanqi Gold Gynecological Regulation Tablets), Jia Wei Yi Mu Cao Gao (Modified Motherwort Paste), Fu Ke Shi Wei Pian (Gynecological Ten-Ingredient Tablets).
