Change the Habit of Throat Clearing
★ Individual vocal abilities vary—span (pitch range), intensity (vocal cord tension), duration (voice usage time). Exceeding these limits risks vocal cord damage. Teachers with low voices should use amplifiers to avoid straining.
★ Avoid eating too much before teaching—overfull stomach leads to vocal strain. Drink some plain water beforehand to lubricate the throat.
★ During menstruation and pregnancy, vocal cords undergo physiological changes—more delicate and slower to heal after injury. Voice rest is essential during these periods.
★ Habits like smoking, drinking alcohol, eating chili, or consuming cold drinks after singing karaoke harm the throat. Minimize or eliminate these behaviors.
★ Stop clearing your throat habitually. Many do it to clear phlegm or clarify voice, but this sudden, forceful tightening damages vocal cords.
★ After vocal cord polyp or nodules surgery, avoid speaking for over 2 weeks. Delayed mucosal recovery may cause permanent hoarseness.
★ When sick, especially with hoarseness, rest your voice. Regular exercise strengthens immunity and helps prevent colds—key to preventing throat diseases.
★ Avoid shouting loudly to reduce throat strain. Rest your voice after each class—practice work-life balance.
★ When feeling voice fatigue, hoarseness, or sore throat, rest or seek treatment—consult a doctor if needed.
★ In cold weather, wrap a scarf around your neck and wear a mask when going out to avoid direct cold air irritation to the throat.
★ Avoid medications with drying effects, such as antihistamines.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Dietary Remedies for Vocal Health
★ Hoarseness caused by colds or sudden loud talking is classified as “external pathogen-induced” hoarseness in TCM. Eat more moistening, soothing, light foods like fresh fruits, radishes, spinach.
Recommended drinks for external pathogen-induced hoarseness:
Radish Ginger Juice: Grate one white radish, extract juice, mix with a little ginger juice, stir well and drink.
Bitter Melon Tea: Use 2–3 bitter melons, steep in boiling water, add a bit of rock sugar when drinking—drink as tea.
★ Hoarseness from long-term loud shouting is considered “deficiency of yin essence” in TCM. Consume lean meats, duck meat, eggs, dairy products. Both types require avoiding spicy, grilled foods and abstaining from alcohol.
Recommended beverages:
Lily Porridge: 30 grams fresh lilies (dried also acceptable), boil until nearly cooked, add starch to thicken into porridge, sweeten with a little rock sugar before serving.
Fall Pear Paste: Available commercially; consume daily.
