The Impact of Tea and Coffee on Sexual Function

The Impact of Tea and Coffee on Sexual Function
Tea is the most widely consumed beverage worldwide, across all cultures and eras. It contains various alkaloids such as caffeine and theophylline, which stimulate the central nervous system upon absorption, helping eliminate fatigue, invigorate the mind, and improve sensitivity and responsiveness to sexual stimuli. Therefore, moderate tea consumption can enhance and improve libido, benefiting sexual function.
However, since many people engage in sexual activity shortly before bedtime, drinking tea at night may increase nervous system excitability, leading to insomnia. Thus, it is not advisable to drink strong tea before bed to boost sexual excitement, as it may disrupt sleep.
Tea has both positive and negative effects on sexual function. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, excessive consumption of strong tea can cause over-diuresis, damaging the kidneys and weakening sexual capacity. Additionally, due to tea’s bitter and cold nature, individuals with deficient kidney yang should avoid drinking too much.
Coffee, a relatively new “foreign” beverage in Chinese households, is also a stimulant. To some extent, it enhances one’s perception of external stimuli or self-awareness. After drinking coffee, people often experience more intense sensations during sex. Its stimulating effect increases sexual arousal, boosts libido, shortens the time to orgasm, and its impact is more pronounced in women than men. Some overseas studies suggest that drinking one cup of coffee daily can enhance libido and improve sexual function.
Yet, coffee is a stimulant, and excessive intake offers no health benefits. It may leave one in a state of excitement even after sex, hindering physical and mental recovery. Recent foreign studies indicate that high doses of coffee may have mutagenic effects. Experts therefore advise against long-term or excessive coffee consumption—moderation is best.
