“Cool Head, Warm Feet” Is Better Than Medicine
“Cool head, warm feet” is an ancient medical principle for treating excess conditions and supplementing deficiencies, and also a key rule for health preservation.
First, “cool head”
In general, keeping the head relatively cool is beneficial for health. During periods of intense work, washing the face with cold water can refresh the mind and enhance cognitive function. Long-term practice of cold-water facial washing can also prevent colds. The method involves first filling a basin with cold water, taking a deep breath, submerging the entire face in water for as long as possible, repeating several times; then soaking hands in water for several minutes, followed by wiping the face with a damp towel. This routine not only moisturizes the skin and brightens the eyes but also clears the mind, invigorates the spirit, dispels cold, and prevents colds.
Second, “warm feet”
The feet are farthest from the heart and most susceptible to invasion by cold pathogens, hence the saying “cold starts from the feet.” Therefore, foot warmth is crucial. Some people use stoves to heat their feet, which can lead to cracked skin. The best method is soaking feet in hot water. Prepare a basin with half a basin of hot water, keep a hot water bottle nearby, immerse both feet in the water, ensuring the temperature is high enough but tolerable without damaging the feet. Soak for at least 20 minutes; when the water cools, refill with hot water from the bottle to maintain a consistently hot temperature.
Regularly soaking feet in hot water helps expel cold, warm the whole body, promote circulation, relieve fatigue, improve brain function after morning exercise, enhance sleep quality before bedtime, and aid in treating athlete’s foot.
