Preparing for Sleep
Before bedtime, maintain a calm mind and relaxed spirit. As the saying goes: “First calm the heart, then fall asleep.” This emphasizes that mental clarity and emotional tranquility are essential for sleep. One hour before bed, avoid activities that stimulate the brain, such as watching intense sports events, thrilling movies or books, arguments, or anger. Also, avoid drinking strong tea or coffee, as these can excite the cerebral cortex and hinder falling asleep. Light activities before sleep—such as walking, jogging, tai chi, qigong, or doing light household chores—can help promote peaceful sleep. If possible, take a warm bath or soak your feet before bed, massage the Yongquan acupoint (foot sole), or drink a glass of milk or a small amount of red wine to induce sleep.
