Sleep Health Preservation

Sleep Health Preservation
One of the classic works on traditional Chinese health preservation, *Three Essentials of Health Preservation*, states: “A good night’s sleep is life’s greatest joy. Ancient people said: ‘Do not seek elixirs, but seek the art of sleeping… After a full night’s rest, one feels refreshed and clear-minded, truly akin to an immortal.’” Clearly, sleep holds immense importance for human beings. Throughout life, about one-third of our time is spent lying in bed. Sleep and health are lifelong companions. Traditional Chinese medicine has always emphasized sleep science, believing that “sleep and diet are the two essentials of health preservation,” and “those who can sleep well can eat well and live long.”
Even short-term insomnia causes significant harm, let alone chronic sleep deprivation. This is because sleep is the most ideal and complete form of rest among all rest methods. Some say sleep is nature’s remarkable restorative agent—a fact supported by experience. After a sound night’s sleep, most people wake up feeling mentally alert and physically energized. In daily life, we often feel exhausted, lethargic, dizzy, and mentally foggy when sleep-deprived, leading to poor work efficiency. But after a good night’s sleep, these symptoms vanish. Someone once vividly described sleep as charging a battery—“storing energy.” Indeed, sleep replenishes energy, restores what was expended during the day, and prepares new energy for the next day’s activities. Good sleep eliminates fatigue throughout the body, allowing the nervous system, endocrine system, metabolism, cardiovascular function, digestion, and respiration to rest and recover. It promotes tissue growth, self-repair, enhances immunity, and boosts resistance to illness. Thus, the saying “Sleep is nature’s best tonic” holds true.
