Clothing for Health Preservation

Clothing for Health Preservation
Ancient Chinese placed great emphasis on the health-preserving role of clothing. *Suwen: Great Treatise on the Regulation of the Four Seasons* states: “In summer, allow the vital energy to disperse freely… In winter, avoid cold and seek warmth; do not let the skin open and sweat excessively, as this violates the principle of preserving essence.” This stresses that in summer, internal yang energy should be allowed to outwardly diffuse, while in winter, one must avoid cold and prevent excessive sweating through the skin.
Clothing serves two main functions: aesthetics and protection. These two aspects are interdependent. People should neither prioritize beauty over protective function nor sacrifice aesthetic value solely for protection. Wearing clothes protects the skin from extreme temperatures and environmental stimuli, while different clothing styles also create distinct visual sensations.
There are four seasons—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—each with varying temperatures. Spring is warm, summer hot, autumn cool, winter cold. The changing seasons require humans to adapt. Since body temperature remains constant, maintaining thermal stability requires conscious effort. Dressing appropriately is one key method to preserve body temperature. We should not only care about appearance but also consider warmth and insulation to prevent illness.
