Massage Techniques for Better Sleep in the Elderly
Massage Techniques for Better Sleep in the Elderly
Older adults often have difficulty falling asleep, frequently experiencing insomnia. Generally, this is a natural result of physiological and psychological changes in aging and should be considered normal. However, if insomnia occurs repeatedly, leading to sleepless nights and constant tossing and turning, it becomes abnormal. Such conditions waste energy and strength without proper rest, potentially signaling underlying organ dysfunction or threatening longevity.
Insomnia in the elderly has many causes. The best way to prevent it is to identify and address the root causes. However, traditional Chinese massage techniques can not only improve sleep quality but also strengthen the body—worth trying.
The following simple and convenient massage method for elderly sleep improvement is recommended:
1. Sit upright, press both hands together and rub them to generate warmth;
2. Use the right palm to massage the left upper limb 30–50 times, then use the left palm to massage the right upper limb 30–50 times (always move from bottom to top);
3. Press both hands together again and rub to generate warmth;
4. Use the right palm to massage the left lower limb 30–50 times, then use the left palm to massage the right lower limb 30–50 times (again, move from bottom to top);
5. Press both hands together and rub to generate warmth;
6. Use the right palm to massage the left foot sole 50–80 times, then use the left palm to massage the right foot sole 50–80 times.
Each full cycle takes about 10–15 minutes.
