Five Foods That Should Not Be Consumed with Milk

Drinking milk regularly greatly benefits health, but we must also be cautious: certain foods should not be consumed together with milk.
Oranges and milk – Avoid eating oranges within one hour before or after drinking milk
Milk protein reacts with citric acid in oranges, causing coagulation, impairing digestion and absorption. During this period, avoid other acidic fruits as well.
Juice and milk – Milk curdles in acidic juice environment
Approximately 80% of milk protein is casein. When milk pH drops below 4.6, large amounts of casein coagulate and precipitate, making it hard to digest and absorb. Severe cases may cause indigestion or diarrhea. Therefore, do not add acidic drinks like juice to milk.
Milk and sugar – Heating milk with sugar produces harmful substances
Lysine in milk reacts with fructose under heat to form toxic fructosyl-lysine, harmful to the human body. Do not add sugar when boiling fresh milk; wait until slightly cooled before adding sugar.
Milk and chocolate – Reaction reduces calcium absorption from milk
Milk contains rich protein and calcium, while chocolate contains oxalic acid. When consumed together, they form insoluble calcium oxalate, severely impairing calcium absorption. This may lead to hair loss, diarrhea, and slowed growth.
Milk and medication – Impairs drug absorption
Some people prefer taking pills with milk instead of water. However, milk significantly affects drug absorption.
Milk tends to form a coating on the surface of medications, allowing calcium and magnesium in milk to react chemically with drugs, forming non-water-soluble substances. This hinders drug release and absorption. Thus, avoid drinking milk one hour before or after taking medication.
