Garlic Can Treat and Prevent Colds
British scientists recently concluded through experiments that garlic can be used to treat and prevent colds due to an active substance called allicin present in its bulb.
Scientists discovered that allicin has antiviral properties, thus alleviating cold symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, and runny nose, helping patients recover faster. Additionally, allicin strengthens the immune system, reducing the risk of catching another cold.
146 volunteers participated in this study—some took medication containing allicin, while others received inactive placebo drugs. Results showed that those taking allicin had only 37% the chance of catching a cold compared to the placebo group, and their cold duration was significantly shorter.
This research was conducted by scientists at the Garlic Research Center in East Sussex, UK, and published in the latest issue of "Advances in Therapy."
