Cultivating Spirit Through Stillness
Cultivating Spirit Through Stillness
As the saying goes: "Stillness replenishes strength, while agitation hastens aging." Only through mental stillness can one regulate the mind, nourish the spirit, and preserve essence. With a calm mind and tranquil spirit, essence and energy gradually increase, the body grows strong, true qi flows inward, and pathogens cannot invade. Conversely, restless and agitated spirit depletes essence and energy, accelerating physical decline. To achieve mental stillness, one must eliminate distractions and promote emotional clarity—only then can the mind be nurtured, spirit retained internally, organs function vigorously, and illness be prevented. The *Suwen: Yin-Yang Ying Xiang Da Lun* says: "Do what is effortless, delight in simplicity, and abide in the void—can one then enjoy infinite life and eternal union with heaven and earth? This is how sages govern their bodies." Jin-Yuan physician Liu Hejian also said: "When the heart is disturbed, myriad diseases arise; when the heart is still, all diseases vanish." Mental stillness conquers agitation and disorder, resists aging, and extends life. Mental stillness and non-action do not mean idleness or aimless existence; rather, they mean setting lofty ambitions, establishing grand goals, eliminating distractions, banishing worries, focusing intently—thus promoting better study, work, and normal physiological metabolism.
Cultivating spirit through stillness also requires abandoning pursuits of fame and profit and rejecting indulgence in material pleasures. Zhang Zhongjing criticized in the preface of *Shanghan Lun*: "People chase honor and status, yearn for powerful figures, strive relentlessly, obsessed only with fame and profit, embellish superficialities while neglecting fundamentals, beautify the exterior while exhausting the interior. If the skin is gone, how can the hair remain?" He warned that those obsessed with fame and profit will eventually exhaust their bodies—what use is fame then? Chasing honor and status exhausts the mind and spirit, causing premature aging.
In material life, one should practice contentment and joy. One must not indulge excessively, speculate endlessly, or remain perpetually dissatisfied. Otherwise, one disturbs the mind, disrupts normal organ function, and thus must maintain mental health through a simple, desire-free lifestyle. Elderly people should abstain from sexual activity and focus on quieting the mind. Let go of fame and profit, avoid sensual pleasures, refrain from greed, moderate diet, eliminate deceit and falsehood, and rid oneself of jealousy—these are the secrets of ancient health preservation.
