“Movement with Minimal Emission” Method in TCM Sexual Health Preservation

TCM sexual health preservation holds that good health relies on conserving essence and minimizing emission. If one can achieve controlled movement without emission—or minimal emission—over time, essence and qi become abundant, spirit sharp, and body clear. Thus, preserving essence is crucial.
The *Yixin Fang* cites ancient medical texts: “The way of yin-yang, essence is precious. Cherishing it preserves life. After emission, draw female qi to restore and replenish.” This means preserving essence strengthens qi, strengthening qi preserves spirit. Thus, the most important aspect of marital intimacy is protecting essence. Preserving essence ensures longevity. Even after emission, one should draw in female qi to self-replenish, restoring essence.
How to restore essence? Ancient practitioners used the “nine breaths, one hold” method. “Nine breaths” mean nine internal breaths; “one hold” means when nearing climax, press the base of the scrotum with the left hand, redirecting impending emission back into the body. “Drawing female qi to self-replenish” refers to the “nine shallow, one deep” technique: partners kiss, breathe in sync, slowly swallow the combined yin-yang energy, guiding it down to the lower abdomen to aid yin strength and essence recovery. Repeat three times. Perform the “nine shallow, one deep” method until completing 81 (odd number) cycles. Withdraw immediately when the penis remains firm—when softening slightly, reinsert. This is the ancient “weak entry, strong exit.”
Some may ask: Isn’t emission the hallmark of sexual climax and pleasure? How can one enjoy full satisfaction without emission? Ancient wisdom says: Emission leaves the body tired, ears ringing, eyes drooping, throat dry, joints weary—temporary pleasure followed by depletion. But controlling emission during movement maintains constant energy, flexibility, and sharper senses.
Guided by this theory, ancient practices like “returning essence to nourish the brain” emerged. While modern medicine finds “returning essence” implausible—since semen is released during ejaculation, returning it seems impossible—some argue that timely intervention may prevent emission. Though theoretically challenging, ancient experience suggests control is possible: when ejaculation approaches, lift the penis slightly, insert into the front third of the vagina, close eyes, focus, pull jaw down, arch back, extend neck, flare nostrils, contract shoulders, inhale through closed mouth—this redirects semen back. One can consciously limit emission—typically releasing only 30–40% of the total. Properly mastered, this technique can inhibit ejaculation effectively.
