Prevention and Treatment of Hyperthyroidism
Hyperthyroidism, abbreviated as "Jiakang," refers to increased thyroid function and excessive secretion of thyroid hormones, leading to accelerated oxidation processes and elevated metabolism. Clinical features include high metabolic syndrome, hyperactivity of nervous and cardiovascular systems, goiter, exophthalmos, etc. Main preventive and therapeutic measures are as follows:
1) Single herbal remedies: First, dry kelp and grind into powder; take 6 grams each time, three times daily; or boil 30–60 grams of kelp daily. Second, place 30 grams of kelp skin, 15 grams of Laminaria, and 15 grams of Sargassum in a clay pot, simmer gently over low heat. When nearly done, add 100 grams of white radish, continue cooking until soft and tender. Third, use Compound Jiaokang Paste (containing 15 grams each of Astragalus, Codonopsis, Ophiopogon, White Peony, Prunella herb, 30 grams each of Rehmannia, Salvia, Raw Oyster Shell, 10 grams each of Perilla seed, Schisandra, Processed Cyperus, 6 grams of White Mustard seed), take one spoonful each time, three times daily, with a course lasting three months.
2) Dietary therapy: Consume high-calorie, high-protein, high-sugar diets (if no diabetes), rich in vitamins and iodine. Drink plenty of water; avoid strong tea, coffee, and other stimulants. The following medicinal foods are effective: ① Use 15–30 grams of longan flesh, steep in boiling water as tea. This tea strengthens spleen and nourishes blood, effective for forgetfulness and fatigue caused by hyperthyroidism. ② Use lotus seeds and glutinous rice in appropriate amounts. Cook lotus seeds until soft, dry, and grind into powder. Take 20 grams of lotus seed powder mixed with 60 grams of glutinous rice to cook porridge, consume once in the morning and once in the evening. This porridge nourishes heart and calms spirit, beneficial for hyperthyroidism. ③ Use 60 grams of kelp, 40 grams of Coix seed, 2 eggs, and suitable salt, monosodium glutamate, pepper powder, and lard. First, wash kelp and cut into strips; clean Coix seed; add both to pot with water and stew until very soft, keep broth. Heat pan on high flame, scramble eggs until cooked. Then pour in kelp, Coix seed, and broth, reheat, add pepper powder and monosodium glutamate. This dish activates blood circulation, softens hard masses, strengthens heart, promotes diuresis—beneficial for patients with hyperthyroidism;
3) Prevention and health maintenance: ① Pay attention to mental and emotional regulation: due to emotional instability and susceptibility to mental stimuli as triggers, special care should be taken to maintain mental peace and cultivate a good psychological state. ② Strengthen physical exercise: regular, consistent physical activity is essential, but avoid rushing or overexertion.<Thyroid>
