Walking on Heels Promotes Longevity
According to the *Family and Life Newspaper*, traditional Chinese medicine holds that one major cause of aging is kidney qi deficiency. When elderly people walk using their heel tips, they stimulate acupoints along the kidney meridian, achieving health and longevity benefits, such as:
Forward and backward walking method: Maintain natural upright posture, keep head straight, tuck chin in, gaze straight ahead. Slight forward lean, slightly raised buttocks, feet forming a 90-degree outward angle. Toes lifted, knees straight. Step forward alternately with left and right foot, or step backward similarly. Arms swing freely, breathe naturally.
Forward three steps, backward two steps method: Same technique and requirements as above. Walk forward three steps, then backward two steps—can be done left-right or forward-backward. Can be practiced indoors or outdoors.
Stair descent exercise: Maintain natural upright posture, head straight, chin tucked in. Slight forward lean, buttocks slightly raised, feet at 90-degree outward angle. Toes lifted, knees straight. Focus attention on stair steps, step up and down alternately with left and right foot. This exercise is intense and mainly suitable for middle-aged and young adults. Elderly people in good health with agile limbs may also try “stair descent exercise,” but safety must be prioritized—preferably with family members present for supervision.
Walking exercise: Normally walk using heels. While strolling, consciously walk on toes, alternating between heel and toe walking. This not only adds variety but also enhances exercise effectiveness.
