A Comprehensive View of TCM Health Preservation and Disease Prevention

🔑 Keywords: Other · TCM Health Preservation
The Yellow Emperor’s Classic compiles health preservation methods from various schools of thought during the pre-Qin period, exploring longevity and health from a medical perspective and establishing numerous theories and practices.
Natural Philosophy
"Harmony between Heaven and Humanity." The human body must conform to natural laws to maintain normal physiological functions. "To go against nature brings disasters; to follow it ensures minor illness does not arise—this is called following the Way." According to seasonal changes, one should nurture life in spring, nourish growth in summer, harvest in autumn, and store in winter. Also, nourish yang in spring and summer, and nourish yin in autumn and winter—using the way of nature to nurture natural life, achieving holistic unity between humans and nature.
Prevention and Treatment Philosophy
"The wise do not treat existing diseases but prevent them before they occur. They do not correct chaos after it arises but prevent it beforehand. Treating illness after it develops, or curing disorder after it forms, is like digging a well only after being thirsty, or forging weapons only after battle—too late!" This emphasizes preventive care. "Avoid harmful external pathogens at the right time; remain tranquil and free from desires, so true qi flows freely; guard your spirit inwardly, and illness will never arise!" Avoid external pathogenic factors and internal emotional disturbances to achieve prevention before disease onset.
Willpower Philosophy
"Willpower gathers the soul and spirit, adapts to cold and heat, and balances joy and anger." Use willpower in harmony with seasonal characteristics to regulate emotions. "In spring, three months, this is called 'renewal,' allowing the will to flourish"; "In summer, three months, this is called 'prosperity,' keeping the will free from anger"; "In autumn, three months, this is called 'harmony,' keeping the will calm"; "In winter, three months, this is called 'concealment,' keeping the will hidden and quiet." In short, the spirit and will should be joyful in spring, full in summer, calm in autumn, and reclusive in winter—thus maintaining "no unusual pain, everything remains intact, vital energy never wanes, spirit stays focused, soul and spirit remain undispersed, regret and anger do not arise, and the five zang organs remain unharmed."
Essence and Qi Philosophy
"Unlimited desires and endless worries cause essence and qi to deteriorate, vitality to fade, and thus the spirit departs, making recovery impossible." The strength or weakness of essence and qi determines the process of growth, aging, and disease resistance. Therefore, health preservation requires caution in sexual activity and accumulation of essence and spirit.
Movement and Stillness Philosophy
"Being able to move and rest, one attains longevity." Advocates nurturing both body and spirit. Adapt movement and stillness according to seasons: in spring, "go to bed late and rise early, walk widely in the courtyard"; in summer, "go to bed late and rise early, without resenting the sun"; in autumn, "go to bed early and rise early, rise with chickens"; in winter, "go to bed early and rise late, waiting for sunlight."
Dietary Therapy Philosophy<br"Food is paramount for people." Promotes "eating with moderation" to preserve the postnatal source of spleen and stomach. As stated, "Overeating injures the spleen and stomach," leading to insufficient nourishment and susceptibility to illness. Also warns against imbalanced tastes and overindulgence. "Medicinal herbs attack pathogens; grains nourish; fruits assist; meats benefit; vegetables supplement. Combine flavors and consume to replenish essence and qi." "Thus, carefully balance the five tastes, bones become straight, tendons flexible, blood and qi flow smoothly, and pores become tight. Then bones become strong, following the proper path faithfully, ensuring long life."
