Folk Remedy for Elderly Constipation

Constipation is one of the most common conditions, particularly prevalent among the elderly. Patients may go 3–5 days or 6–7 days without bowel movement, passing hard, bead-like stools that are difficult to expel, causing great discomfort. Below are collected effective folk and famous physician remedies for constipation, for patient reference.
(1) Drink a glass of cold salt water (about 120 ml) or honey water (mix honey with 100 ml warm water at 60°C) on an empty stomach every morning.
(2) Drink a glass of sour milk before bedtime.
(3) Boil 75–100g Cassia Seed and drink as tea, several times daily. This remedy also effectively treats hypertension.
(4) Cook 250g sweet potato leaves, add appropriate rock sugar, and consume 1–2 times daily.
(5) Take a 15cm section of pork intestine, fill with 15–20g Sophora Flower, 30g Raw Rehmannia, add some water, tie both ends tightly with straw, boil in a pot, then simmer gently for 20 minutes until fully cooked. Remove the herbs, drink the broth, and eat the intestine. One dose daily.
(6) Grind 60g walnut kernels and 30g black sesame seeds together. Consume one spoonful each morning and evening with warm water.
(7) Mix 25g black sesame seeds, 25g walnut kernels, and 25g Platycladus seed together, grind into paste, mix with honey, and consume twice daily on an empty stomach.
(8) Boil 50–60g raw Atractylodes, take orally. For severe cases, double the dosage. One dose daily. For chronic constipation due to kidney yang deficiency and impaired spleen function (Yin-type constipation):
Raw Atractylodes 60g, Cinnamon 3g, Magnolia Bark 6g, decoct and take orally, one dose daily.
(9) Boil 20g Cistanche, 15g Angelica, 10g Hemp Seed. Once cooled to suitable temperature, add appropriate honey and consume. This formula is highly effective for elderly patients with yin deficiency and blood insufficiency and severe constipation.
