So Simple: Rub Your Palms to Prevent Cold

🔑 Keywords: Other · Acupuncture and Tuina
Cold is the most common illness in winter. Regularly rubbing the Yuji point is an effective preventive method. The base of the thumb on the palm forms a prominent muscle mound resembling a fish, hence in traditional Chinese medicine, this area is called Yuji. TCM believes the central point of Yuji is closely related to respiratory organs. The Yuji point has functions of resolving exterior patterns, clearing the throat, and transforming phlegm. Daily rubbing and pressing of the Yuji point strengthens the lung’s function of governing the skin and hair, improving the constitution of susceptible individuals and enhancing resistance to external pathogens. It also shows significant efficacy in early cold symptoms like sore throat and sneezing.
Simple method to rub Yuji: Rub the two Yuji points against each other, mimicking how one rubs peanut skins with both palms. Hold one hand steady while rubbing the other hand, about 10–15 times. When the Yuji area begins to feel warm, imagine the warmth flowing up the arm into the lungs. Continue for about two minutes until the entire palm warms up. Then switch hands and repeat. This method requires no specific location or time, can be done anytime, especially suitable for those prone to colds.
