Acupuncture Therapy for Acne

One, Syndrome Differentiation
1. Wind-Heat in Lung Channel
Main Manifestations: Red facial flush, hot, painful acne, possible pustules, red tongue with thin yellow coating, rapid floating pulse.
2. Damp-Heat in Spleen and Stomach
Main Manifestations: Red, swollen, painful skin lesions, constipation, yellow urine, poor appetite, abdominal distension, red tongue with thick yellow greasy coating, slippery rapid pulse.
3. Spleen Dysfunction
Main Manifestations: Red but dull rashes, recurrent episodes, possibly poor appetite, loose stools, fatigue, thin white coating, soft rapid pulse.
4. Blood Stasis Obstruction
Main Manifestations: Long-standing acne, dark-colored rashes, nodules present, dark tongue with thin white coating, wiry pulse.
5. Liver-Kidney Deficiency
Main Manifestations: Bright red acne, accompanied by soreness and weakness in waist and knees, pale red tongue with thin white or scant coating, fine pulse.
Two, Treatment
1. Wind-Heat in Lung Channel
Therapeutic Principle: Dispel wind, clear heat, promote lung function.
Prescription: Jingze (SI1), Hegu (LI4), Dazhui (GV14), Feishu (BL13).
Procedure: Use filiform needle dispersion method at Jingze (SI1), Hegu (LI4), and Dazhui (GV14). At Feishu (BL13), first use three-edged needle pricking, then apply cupping.
2. Damp-Heat in Spleen and Stomach
Therapeutic Principle: Clear heat, resolve dampness, regulate bowels.
Prescription: Quchi (LI11), Shangjuxu (ST37), Tianshu (ST25), Yinlingquan (SP9).
Procedure: Filiform needle dispersion method.
3. Spleen Dysfunction
Therapeutic Principle: Strengthen spleen, resolve dampness.
Prescription: Sanyinjiao (SP6), Zusanli (ST36), Hegu (LI4), Pishu (BL20).
Procedure: Filiform needle tonification method, can be moxibustion.
4. Blood Stasis Obstruction
Therapeutic Principle: Activate blood, resolve stasis, nourish complexion.
Prescription: Geshu (BL17), Neiguan (PC6), Four Gates (LR3 + GB34), Xuehai (SP10), Feishu (BL13).
Procedure: Except for Geshu (BL17) and Feishu (BL13) which use bloodletting cupping, all other points use filiform needle dispersion method.
5. Liver-Kidney Deficiency
Therapeutic Principle: Tonify liver and kidney.
Prescription: Taixi (KI3), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Ququan (LR8), Lishu (BL18), Shenshu (BL23).
Procedure: Filiform needle tonification method.
