Acupuncture Treatment for Postmenopausal Osteoporosis
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a common condition among postmenopausal women. Epidemiological data from abroad indicate that the incidence rate in women over 60 years old reaches 58%. It is associated with decreased levels of hormones synthesized by the ovaries, leading to bone pain and fractures, severely affecting women's quality of life and increasing disability and mortality rates. Since the pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, pharmacological treatments have certain limitations, and long-term use of Western medicine often causes various side effects.
A research achievement on acupuncture for health preservation in middle-aged and elderly people found that moxibustion can increase serum estrogen levels in healthy elderly individuals. Inspired by this, researchers, based on traditional Chinese medical theory and modern medical findings on postmenopausal osteoporosis, believe the fundamental cause of postmenopausal osteoporosis is "kidney deficiency," combined with factors such as poor postnatal constitution, resulting in osteoporosis. Treatment focuses on tonifying the kidneys, supplemented by strengthening the spleen. Clinical efficacy was observed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and relevant biochemical indicators, with a drug control group used for comparative assessment. After treatment, patients first experienced relief or disappearance of symptoms like bone pain, with significant improvement in biochemical markers. Six months later, bone mineral density showed varying degrees of improvement, particularly at the second to fourth lumbar vertebrae and the upper end of the femur.
