Maternal Nutrition and Fetal Growth and Development
It is well known that the fetus primarily obtains nutrients from its mother. Nutrients are transported via the placenta to support fetal growth, development, and metabolic processes. Thus, maternal nutrition directly affects fetal development.
• Glucose: Glucose is the main source of energy. The fetus derives glucose entirely from the mother. Normal glucose supply ensures healthy fetal growth. However, excessive maternal sugar intake leads to excess glucose delivery, potentially resulting in macrosomia—especially in diabetic mothers, increasing the risk of large-for-gestational-age babies.
• Amino Acids: Amino acids are key building blocks for fetal tissue synthesis. Demand increases significantly in late pregnancy. Pregnant women should consume more protein-rich foods such as lean meat, eggs, soy products, fish, and shellfish to ensure normal fetal development and prevent low birth weight.
• Fatty Acids: During the last months of pregnancy, dietary fat should not exceed 15%–20% of total calories. Cholesterol intake should be limited—avoid excessive egg yolks, meat skins, etc. High maternal cholesterol intake raises fetal blood cholesterol levels. American researchers suggest fetal cholesterol above 160 μmol/L may lead to early-onset atherosclerosis.
• Minerals: Mineral and trace element transfer supports fetal growth. Deficiency impairs development—for example, iron deficiency causes delayed growth; zinc deficiency leads to developmental delay and congenital malformations. Preventing deficiencies relies on avoiding picky eating and ensuring diverse, balanced, and palatable diets.
• Vitamins: Fetal vitamins are absorbed through the placenta from the mother. Poor maternal appetite or impaired digestion negatively impacts fetal development—e.g., vitamin D deficiency can cause rickets in the fetus.
In summary, to ensure normal fetal development, pregnant women must enhance nutrition—meeting both their own needs and providing adequate nourishment for the fetus—while maintaining balanced and comprehensive nutrition for optimal maternal and fetal health.
