Circular Abdominal Massage for Constipation
Constipation in the elderly is primarily caused by reduced intestinal motility, preventing fecal matter from moving into the sigmoid colon. Massaging the abdomen in a clockwise direction—following the natural path of the colon—stimulates colonic movement, helping feces reach the rectum. This stimulates intestinal wall sensory cells, sending signals to the brain to create the urge to defecate.
Procedure: Empty your bladder upon waking, then drink 300–500 ml of cool water. Stand upright. Place your right palm on the lower right abdomen, and your left palm on top of the right hand. Begin massaging upward from the lower abdomen to the right hypochondrium, then sweep across to the left hypochondrium, and finally down to the lower left abdomen. Repeat this clockwise motion 30–50 times. Perform once daily. Results become noticeable after 10 days, and complete normal bowel movement can be achieved within 30 days.
Special Notes:
1. Never massage counterclockwise.
2. This method enhances abdominal muscle activity and intestinal motility, so avoid performing it when excessively hungry or immediately after a large meal.
3. Not recommended for individuals with acute abdominal inflammation or malignant tumors.
4. Weak individuals may perform the massage lying flat on their back.
