Small Herbal Formula with Walnut
Walnut kernel, also known as walnut, Persian walnut, walnut meat, or "wan sui zi". Taste sweet, nature warm. It has effects of tonifying the kidney and yang, strengthening the waist and knees, warming the lungs and relieving asthma, and moistening the intestines to relieve constipation. The Kai Bao Ben Cao states it "makes one healthy and robust, moisturizes skin and darkens hair." The Ben Cao Gang Mu notes it "tonifies qi and blood, moistens dryness, transforms phlegm, strengthens the life gate, regulates the three burners, warms the lungs and moistens the intestines, treats deficiency-cold asthma and lower back pain." Widely used in folk medicine, here are some selected applications:
1. Frequent urination due to kidney deficiency: 2–3 walnuts, roasted in ash until cooked, remove kernels, chew slowly before bedtime, take with moderate wine. Once daily for 5–7 days.
2. Neuroasthenia: 30g walnut kernels, 30g black sesame seeds, 60g mulberry leaves. Crush into paste, form pills (each 3g). Take 3 pills each time, twice daily.
3. Tinnitus and lower back pain due to kidney deficiency: 2 walnut kernels, 7 wu-wei-zi (Schisandra berries), 20 goji berries. Chew finely before bedtime, swallow with honey water. Once nightly for 5–7 days.
4. Urinary tract stones 1: Equal amounts of walnut kernels, rock sugar, and sesame oil. First fry sesame oil, then add walnut kernels and fry until brown. Remove, grind into powder, return to oil, then add rock sugar powder and stir until thick paste forms. Take 3 times daily, 2 tablespoons each time. Continue use.
5. Habitual constipation: 60g walnut kernels, 30g black sesame seeds, ground into powder. Take 1 spoon each morning and evening with warm water. Effective for chronic constipation with long-term use.
6. Spleen-kidney deficiency with cough and shortness of breath: 10g walnut kernels, 10g ginseng, 5g schisandra berries. Boil in water and drink the decoction. Twice daily.
7. Chronic cough and wheezing due to dual deficiency of kidney and liver: 250g walnut kernels, 250g roasted sweet apricot kernels. First boil apricot kernels in water for 1 hour, then add walnut kernels. When liquid nearly evaporates, add 500g honey, mix well and bring to boil. Take once daily, 10g each time.
8. Impotence: 50g walnut kernels, first fry in sesame oil until golden, then add chopped scallions and stir-fry with salt. Eat with meals as desired. Once or twice daily.
9. Bronchial asthma: 1–2 walnut kernels, 1–2 slices of ginger. Chew thoroughly in mouth. Once in the morning and once in the evening.
10. Chronic bronchitis: 25g walnut kernels, ground into powder, mixed with sugar. Long-term use yields effective results.
12. Excessive vaginal discharge: 10 walnut leaves, 2 eggs. Add water and simmer; drink soup and eat eggs.
13. Hair loss: 6 walnut kernels, 100g fresh cypress leaf, 9 melon seeds. Grind all three ingredients together. Soak in 1500ml well water for 3 days, then use to wash hair, once every 12 hours, for 3 consecutive days.
14. Otitis media: First clean ear canal with hydrogen peroxide, then instill 2–3 drops of walnut oil. Twice to thrice daily.
15. Carbuncles: Crush walnut kernels and apply directly to affected area. Change dressing twice daily.
16. Lymph node tuberculosis: 30g fresh young walnut branches, 30g fresh yarrow. Boil in water and drink as tea, three times daily.
17. Vomiting: 1 walnut roasted to charcoal, ground into fine powder. For stomach cold, take with ginger decoction; for stomach heat, take with decoction of 12g coptis. Twice daily.
18. Cervical cancer: 30g walnut tree branch, 4 eggs. Wash and chop branch, add water and eggs, boil until eggs are cooked. Remove shells and boil another 4 hours. Eat 2 eggs each time, twice daily, continuously.
Note: Not suitable for those with yin deficiency and fire excess, phlegm-heat cough, or loose stools.<Walnut>
